The New England Patriots managed to keep one of their top two much-coveted defensive backs from hitting the free-agent market Sunday when free safety Devin McCourty agreed to re-sign with the team.

The deal, which was first reported by Fox Sports, is for five years and $47.5 million, with $28.5 million guaranteed, a source told ESPN.com's Mike Reiss.

McCourty confirmed the agreement Sunday night on Comcast SportsNet.

BB_72 : money being thrown about is mind boggling. either I'm too old, don't have a clue what to anticipate these guys will get, too frugal or all of the above... CRAZY MAKE IT RAIN $$$$

Looks like all our desired free agency targets are signing elsewhere. Good thing we have the money to keep Tulloch and resign our backups, though.

All attention went to Suh. Now we are trying to play catch up when agents were talking to other teams and getting deals done we weren't doing anything other than Suh.

Who's left out there at this point that supports The Clown Show at this point?

You can't have it both ways. You ridiculed their co sideration of tagging Suh. You weren't oblivious to the alternate plan of striking out in free agency. And you can't defend it by saying it was their attention to Suh when they have a very recent track record of paying attention to, and attracting, free agents in the past.

There's nothing to support that assertion at all. Who says we weren't talking to other players? And look at these deals being reported- I wouldn't have signed any of those guys to those kind of deals. Teams are over-spending, and so far none of them have been the DTs, OL (minus Hudson), or CBs that are the biggest needs for us. Lots of RBs left to shore up the depth, too.

Let's watch who we go after after some of these big name deals are done.

I'm still hoping for Knighton and Wilfork/Ngata at DT, House at CB, and Antone Smith and Helu at RB. House and Knighton will be bigger fish kind of targets, but Smith and Helu can bolster our RB unit on the cheap...

What about Wilfork and Ngata? Both are on the wrong side of 30, but I don't think anybody doubts that each guy still has some good years left in the tank...

^^^ age is 1 thing and pretty much both are stop-gap, IMO only. I believe we have to think outside of the box here as the probability of drafting a quality 4-3 base 3-tech in the draft, where we are located in each round, could be a gamble early on, JMHO. Once again, many analysts have stated it's a deep draft, well then, I'll counter that the quality isn't all that good after the 1st 5-6 DT's, JMO.

DT Williams USC.............top 5
DT Shelton WAS.............top15
DT Brown TEX................top 20 more than likely if not 10-15
DT Goldman FSU............top 20 "same as above a possibility (better as 1-tech, imo)
DT Davis IOW................should be early 2nd rd (better as a 1-tech)
DT Bennett OSU.............early to mid-2nd round
DT Cooper WSU.............late 2nd round to early-mid 3rd round
DT Jarrett CLM...............should be anywhere mid-3rd round to early 4th rd
DT Davison FST..............should be late 5th-anywhere 6th

I don't even know what you are trying to say here? What does what they have done in the past have to do with the current situation?? Honestly, how are those two things comparable?

I did more than ridicule the tag assertion, I said it wasn't actually EVER a consideration and I stand firmly behind that. As a result they should have had a plan B and been prepared to begin talking with other FA's as soon as the window opened. But it doesn't appear they did that at all, at least not until maybe yesterday afternoon when the news broke on Suh going to Miami.

We would have had everything tied up in him so pursuing anyone else would not have been a real possibility. The arrogance they have shown from the very beginning going back to last season has been staggering. Millenhew said he expected a deal done on the verge of FA, that didn't happen. He said it again this year. He was right this time, only the deal was signed with another team. LewAAnd told us in early Feb there was a "very good chance" of a dealing being done in the next weeks. That didn't happen either.

And now we haven't so much as heard a peep of the Lions even talking with anyone or their agent short of the round the league tour Langford appears to be doing. It's still early in free agency, technically it hasn't even opened yet, but the early indications aren't encouraging.

You are aware that we could have started talking with their agents two days ago right? For some reason you seem to think that everything stays secretive in the NFL when nothing actually does. How do you explain that there hasn't been one report of us speaking with anyone's agent yet you can read article after article after article of the players other teams are targeting and deals being reported?

We now having a gaping hole at DT bigger than a **** stars snatch and haven't heard a single word about how we are trying to fill it and with who.

Those two guys are used to starring in championship games. They're not coming to Detroit.

Lions need to sign (hopefully) 1 of the following three

DT Knighton.............. I think his asking price will be way too much
DT Williams............... Probably ends up at Den or Oak or Sea
DT Langford.............. Den, per media sources, seems a likely destination for him
________________________________________________________________________________________

we end up signing Fairley, CJ Mosley and Stephen Paea

Williams is in no way shape or form a backup. He was a starter for one of the best defenses in football for the last few years. Not sure if the Lions are interested. I have not seen anything yet. Mosely was a backup for us but could start on some teams.

The Pats won a SB with him. If they win another it will be worth it. Smart investment w everyone else in that division beefing up.

no Swarm, I was merely agreeing with TP that Orlando Franklin and Rodney Hudson both were over-paid on their new contracts.
