This may fall into the "who cares column" but it's all we've got at the moment.

The Rangers have signed first baseman Mike McDade to a minor-league deal, Gerry Fraley of the Dallas Morning News writes. McDade, 25, hit .242/.298/.349 at Double-A New Hampshire and Triple-A Buffalo in the Blue Jays system last season. He was drafted and developed by the Blue Jays, but also played in the White Sox and Indians systems before rejoining the Toronto organization.

I may be off my game ... but I don't see any way that Fielder for Kinsler was a gamble but if it was TEX future values went up.

Would TEX have rather had Kinsler's '14 season of .275/.307/.420/.727 and .273/.344/.449/.793 through 2018... OR

Would TEX rather have Odor's .259/.297.402/.698... PLUS whatever Prince brings through 2020... PLUS whatever moves are made out of Andrus/Profar/Odor?

I don't think its even close.

It's certainly a gamble, given that players like Fielder tend to age poorly....and even before his injury in 2014, he was coming off his worst season since his rookie year.

JUST A THOUGHT: Say Rua wins 1B job. Choo fails to start at cof. That leaves Choo Fielder and Moreland to DH. Not a good picture to me. Of course it's just a thought and most likely won't happen or could it?

I would too, but I can't see them sitting Fielder if he is wanting to play in the field. They should, but I don't think they will. I guess Banister could surprise me.

He's terrible with the glove and a health risk to boot, no sense in even bothering having him out there if we hope to recoup ANY value on the investment in Fielder, his only value is offense anyway

Choo played an ok RF even on a bum ankle, he'll be ok out there next year, Moreland is an afterthought, even saying he will DH at this point is a stretch

I'd rather let Deshields, Sardi, Rua, Smolinski & Choice cover the IF and OF depth at this rate, cut Moreland loose and let him catch on elsewhere

My fear is they keep Moreland. Rua is my choice in the IF and Choo in RF.Not sure about LF. Will see how it plays out.

Rua can't play SS (long term), CF or C but is an option basically everywhere else, and Deshields was a Rule V pick that has to stay on the ML roster if they want to keep him

There are a lack of places for Moreland to play that others can't already do and provide more flexibility, he's an afterthought, a unnecessary luxury

I think they play Prince at 1B and Choo in RF. Therefore since I like Rua better than the other options I hope he plays everyday in LF. If Rua can't play close to everyday then I hope he starts in Round Rock. He doesn't need to be a utility player at this point. If it was up to me Rua would start at 1B and Prince would DH and Smolinski, Choice and Moreland would fight it out for LF.

As far as DeShields goes I think if he doesn't get an attitude adjustment and becomes a much harder working and smarter player that he doesn't make it here past June.

I agree with you on what they should do, minus having Moreland having anything to do with LF or the OF in general

When I saw the headline on this ... "Rangers Sign Former Power Prospect to Deal" ... I had this horrible feeling in the pit of my stomach that it signaled the return of Jason Botts.

The Rangers have signed righty Mitch Atkins, according to the Pacific Coast League transactions page. Atkins, 29, pitched for Double-A Mississippi and Triple-A Gwinnett in the Braves system in 2014, posting a combined 3.76 ERA, 7.0 K/9 and 2.3 BB/9 in 141 1/3 innings. He pitched briefly in the big leagues for the Cubs (2009-2010) and Orioles (2011).

i know you were but this and the Adkins move are minor league fodder and really means nothing. hopefully between now and the opening of ST JD gets serious about the SP and C needs

Was not trying to state any big news. Just news and it is always good to stock the minors for future moves.

no argument i agree it is good to load up the minors

Honestly, I'd never heard of McDade until this move was made.

But he had 70 HRs at 4 levels of the Toronto organization between 2009-12. Although over the last 2 seasons at higher levels with 3 organizations he's got only 17.

Maybe he's a lower level wonder, or a guy who just needs some coaching/patience and he'll prosper. We'll see I guess.
