It is official. Texas will extend a qualifying offer to Nelson Cruz per Evan Grant.

If I'm Nelly I'm taking the 14.1 million, and seeking a deal next year. 14 is more than he'll get per year in a multi year deal. I can understand the security part of it too though. I hope we sign him either way. It won't be good if we lose another part of our chemistry.

I think he goes for more because of his age...it's a little risky not to, what if he has a down year, hurts his value. We'll see.

Believe me, I want him to stay. I like Nelly dammit....more importantly, he produces, win-win

Maybe some new chemistry is what we need. Sure we will see some new faces in the lineup

Glad to see the Rangers give Cruz that 1 year qualifying offer. I say 50/50 chance that Cruz accepts it. Many stories seem to suggest that Cruz really wants that a multi-year deal.

That's not true, which is why I said to get on the phone JD.

The five-day Quiet Period ends at 10:59pm central time on Monday, November 4th. During the Quiet Period, free agents may talk to any team about either side's interest, the player's potential role, the advantages and disadvantages of playing for that team and city, and length of a potential contract, guarantee provisions, and no-trade provisions. A free agent may not, however, negotiate terms or contract with a new team during this period. He may negotiate terms and enter into a contract with his former team.

Also, a free agent has until Monday, November 11th by 4pm central time to accept a qualifying offer. Any player who accepts is considered signed for 2014. If a player declines a qualifying offer, his former team becomes eligible for compensation if the player signs a Major League contract with another Major League team before the 2014 draft. The former team receives an amateur draft choice as compensation, while the signing team forfeits its highest available selection and the accompanying bonus pool money in the draft.

I don't think there's any chance he'll accept a one year deal from anyone. With the power bat market being what it is, it wouldn't surprise me to see him get a 3 year. But the Rangers probably won't be the one to do it. My thoughts are a 2 year, $32 mil offer and then let the chips fall.

Pretty sure you are exactly right. I believe he has only a few days before he decided either way, but I don't see anyway he accepts 1/14 when he can get 2/24 or maybe 3/36

How high do you think the Rangers will go?
I could see the Angels trading Trumbo, and signing Nelly just to stick it to us.

agree the QO only guarantees that the rangers get a 1st round supplemental pick if he signs with someone else. i think the Rangers seriously look at a 3 year deal for around 39M for Cruz

How about over paying him about 20% and offer 2 years around $30 mil, and maybe have a player option for year 3?
