"MLBTR's Jeff Todd recently examined the future payroll obligations of all 30 Major League teams -- a study that showed the Mariners to be one of the best-equipped teams to accommodate a mega-deal of this nature. The only other player that the Mariners have signed beyond the 2014 season is ace Felix Hernandez, meaning that despite the historic nature of this deal, the M's still have an annual commitment of roughly $50MM to the years in which the Cano and Hernandez deals overlap (assuming a straight $24MM annual salary for Cano)."

And that is all well and good but he is 31. In about 5-6 years they will be paying a player $24 mill a year who may be a shell of himself.

Thank you.

Everyone is so anxious to write this team off and I'm not.

And if Cano puts up similar numbers as he did in NY, then this will help slay the past parks curse against hitters. Since they've moved the fences in, now standing at 331-358-340 from left to right, this isn't the park it once was.

Will they challenge next season, no. But they are trying to make strides is all I'm saying.

I suspect they know that. My only point is, they are not in dire straights...
I agree with ESPN, they could emerge as a force in a couple seasons

Ken Rosenthal@Ken_Rosenthal [ame=""]15m[/ame] Cited sources earlier saying that #Rangers and #Marlins are pursuing Napoli. Rangers would seem more likely threat to #RedSox.

I'm sorry to keep repeating myself, but this is the new market for pitching

Oh I agree. Just sort of pointing out the market can very very crazy and the baseball landscape fits that characteristic.
