1 might happen. It’s going to be hard to trade Semien, with his contract and age. Eovaldi is going to be expensive. With the owner wanting to get under the luxury tax, probably not going to happen. Want nothing to do with Montgomery.
You might have to pick up part of Semien's contract. You might only have to pick up a few million in 2025 and a little more every year until you are paying half by the last year.

I would just as soon go a cheaper option of they have to pick up a starting pitcher. I wouldn't mind signing Lorenzen, if they need a starting pitcher.

To me doing nothing at the trade deadline was stupid. It was obvious that this team wasn’t going anywhere without help.
how many decent or better prospects were you willing to give up because the veteran players we had weren't going to bring anything good?

Anyone interested in Randal Grichuk?

From Mark Feinsand:

Randal Grichuk has declined his end of a $6 million mutual option with the Dbacks and will become a free agent, per source. Grichuk will receive a $500,000 buyout.

From Jeff Passan:

And so the offseason begins: The Atlanta Braves are trading outfielder Jorge Soler to the Los Angeles Angels, a source tells ESPN.

The Rangers have claimed right-hander Roansy Contreras off outright waivers from the Angels, reports Kiley McDaniel of ESPN.

First of all, why are they keeping prospects, since they have an old manager that only wants to play old players no matter how bad they are. When they did call up a prospect all they did was sit on the bench. Depends on who you trading for. You have to give up something to get something. Trading for Grossman, Chaffin and Scherzer were mistakes. And they gave up a top prospect for Scherzer. If the older players weren’t going to bring anything, why are they keeping them.

Typical move by the Rangers. The Angels who need pitching put this guy on waivers. Hasn’t had an era under 4.3 in 4 years.
But, he is still very young. His ERA as a reliever was under 4.00 this year. He had three starts in 2024 with an ERA over 8.00, the last of which was against the Rangers. After that he relieved exclusively.

I imagine guys like Contreras, Pennington, Church, Coleman and maybe another pickup or two will compete for second tier reliever spots.

Those guys would most likely slot in behind a couple of free agents like Yates and Robertson along with Sborz.

Roansy Contreras is 15 days older than Kumar Rocker and about a half year older than Jack Leiter.

prospects are generally players who aren't MLB ready, Bochy's age has nothing to do with why they are not playing in MLB.

Also, we saw several MLB debuts this season, so I'm not sure where you're getting this about Bochy from.

He was thought to be the heir apparent to Bochy. I have no clue what kind of manager he will be, though.
My guess it will depend on how much he gets from owners and GM.

Making a debut is one thing, getting some significant playing time is a lot different.

Also, the difference in top tier prospects like Leiter, Rocker, and Walcott on yhe one hand, and the rest on the other hand, is different. Most likely those top tier prospects got playing time because the organization as a whole said they would.

Over the past couple of years, guys like Foscue, Harris, and Huff are the ones Bochy has had problems playing.

Langford is a prospect, Carter is a prospect, Rocker is a prospect, Leiter is a prospect. did he or did he not play them?

The Rangers make it official.

From Texas Rangers PR:

The Rangers have acquired RHP Roansy Contreras (pronounced “roh-AHN-see”) from the Los Angeles Angels via waiver claim. With this move, the club now has 33 players on its 40-man roster.

Contreras, who turns 25 on Nov. 7, went 2-4 with 2 saves and a 4.35 ERA (33 ER/68.1 IP) over 49 games/3 starts for Pittsburgh and Los Angeles-AL in 2024. He has totaled a career 10-16 record, 3 saves, and 4.72 ERA in 90 G/33 GS for PIT (2021-24) and LAA (2024).

A native of Peralvillo, Dominican Republic, Contreras was originally signed to a minor league contract by New York-AL on 7/2/16. He was dealt to Pittsburgh on 1/24/21 as part of the trade that sent Jameson Taillon to the Yankees.

Over the past couple of years, guys like Foscue, Harris, and Huff are the ones Bochy has had problems playing.

Harris has only been here for 6 games (played in 2), so I can't really say he should count as being denied significant playing time by Bochy.

As for Foscue and Huff, playing time has to be earned, not just given. Foscue put up OK numbers in the minors and looks completely overmatched at the MLB level. Huff has better MLB numbers and you can make the case he's never gotten significant playing time in his MLB career. But he first got called up in 2020, and Bochy didn't start managing here until 2023. And Huff's 2024 AAA numbers were down across the board. Feels like this is more of a FO decision with him instead of being a Bochy thing.

He should have played Huff more last year. Harris should have been up earlier, but Bochy proved how much he would play him, if he had been.

Foscue and other young guys often struggle, but just like veterans who go through prolonged slumps they need to play there way out of them. Duran could be seen the same way under Bochy at times. Smith was that way until Bochy was forced to give him regular playing time.

Langford struggled and was left in because he was an organizational decision that was over Bochy's head. He was given a prolonged chance and it worked. They will do that with certain highly regarded prospects, but rarely with the others.

Jankowski had no business being in the lineup over the last few weeks this year.

Now, Bochy isn't alone in doing things that way. A lot of other managers do it too. Wash certainly was with Profar, and he was a highly regarded prospect.

Montgomery exercised his player option.

From Jeff Wilson:

How much of the $22.5 million would Arizona have to eat for #Rangers to take him back?
