But that is exactly what Wash did to Borbon in 2009 when he came up from AAA. He had Borbon DHing over half the time. Was more productive in the spot than was Hank Blalock (remember him?)

I platoon Olt with Moreland and given him one 3b start and one DH start a week.

Simple as that.

Exactly this. Olt is here to stay. Him getting everyday playing time at AAA is not an option so therefore has no business being discussed in the "what is the best way to use Mike Olt?" discussion. WMW hit the nail on the head. Give Olt a few starts a week at 1B and a start or two at DH. Maybe even the very occasional start at 3B with Beltre at DH. The point is, if Wash weren't so obtuse and hell-bent on playing MY every last game, there would be plenty of opportunities for Olt both on the field and at bat.

DHing and pinch hitting is not for everybody, that's why you normally see veterans doing it. Building a case for Olt as a DH based on one AB is kneejerk. Blalock and Borbon are poor examples since neither have been seen since.

It wasn't based on one at bat. It's based on the notion it's better to get more at bats as dh than rot on the bench 5 days a week.

If it was that simple then all young players starting out should be DHing. If it was that simple MY would be a full time DH rather than Wash putting him the field to keep him happy. Can't think of many things worse than putting a young player at DH and letting him deal with the isolation at the end of the bench when his team is in the field.

So we'll let him sit in isolation on the bench while his teammates are in the field and get no at bats instead right? :L

I think they are doing it right by easing him into playing time and life as a MLB player. The rotting on the bench BS is just a tad to much drama.

After not having much OF talent in the system for a couple seasons, the Rangers certainly have improved the situation in recent years, although not soon enough to cushion a possible loss of Hamilton and potentially Cruz

Martin, Mazara, Guzman, Cone, Brinson, Williams, Jarmon, Akins, Beras

Al ... I wasn't in favor of Borbon DHing when he came up either. My noting that Borbon had DH'd was because Wash said Olt was too young to DH ... yet Borbon was younger at the point that he made Borbon the DH.

In the case of Blalock... not only doesn't he DH any more ... he doesn't do squat any more.

I would prefer Olt playing both ways either at 1b r 3b ... but would accept him at DH on days when Beltre is at 3b, Kinsler at 2b, and Moreland at 1b ... i.e. Olt DH and MY riding pine.

What if any are your thoughts on Joey Butler a more near term corner option (after Martin)?

Just forgot about him honestly, I think he could be a solid contributor

Good eye at the plate, some pop in hit bat, more doubles power than HR power, but I could see him being a 20 HR guy in time

I think he means that Murphy's defense and baserunning have been better compared to the standard Murphy has usually been held too

However I still disagree about Murphy's defense being better even in comparison to Murphy's usually mediocre defense, lots of bad reads lately

And once again he makes this into a Murphy vs Gentry issue, when it should be a Murphy/Gentry vs Young issue

Exactly!

The thing is ... Murphy was the #5 OF defender and baserunner. He's improved to #4 because Martin was sent down. If he got better measured against Murphy's standard doesn't mean he's now #3 ... he's just a less sucky #4 than he was.

You are right. This should not be Gentry vs Murphy. This should be Gentry/Murphy versus Young.

they are projecting that it will take Colby 9 months to a year to recover from his surgery which means he can start throwing somewhere around April to July and allowing for time for him to get to starter-ready we are probably looking at as late as August before he is ready. Do we try and re-sign Dempster and look to add another starter thru the trade route? or do we go with some of our minor league arms?

right now we have Darvish, Holland & Harrison

You forget... TEX has Feldman under contract for 2013 ($9.25mil w/$600k buyout). Take a look to see who has been TEX best SP over the past month.

are we willing to go into next season with those 4 and a rookie? yes Feldman has been our best over the last month which makes it a pretty shaky starting staff now and not projecting to be much steadier next season
