And that's without a deal for Hamilton. Wonder if that includes Feldman's salary. If so that will be a decent chunk taken off.
i hope they drop him.

That is with Young (16), Beltre (16), Ian (13), Nathan (7), Feldman (.6), Yu (9.5), Cruz (10.75), Elvis (5), Leonis Martin (3.25), and Holland (3.2).

You can't bank not paying Feldman as a savings because whether they decide to bring him back or not ... they are going to be paying that $9mil out in new pitching contracts (Colby? Dempster? et.al) to somebody(s).
Here's the best source for contract info as a reference so we are all on the same page.
Cot's Baseball Contracts
I understand that, but it's money that can be used in better players.
exactly. we're talking nearly 9M in freed up money
Was simply pointing out that all it is is $9mil ... and that doesn't go very far. Remember ... Rich Harden ... $6.5mil. What do you think you are going to get for $9mil (minus whatever TEX uses to resign Colby)?

Colby will probably not be ready until just before the AS break so we could probably re-sign him for around 3M or less as the type of surgery he had requires 6 to 9 months to recover.
Well good ... so $6mil - 3mil equals just enough to sign someone of a lesser talent than Rich Harden was.

Or apply that 6 million to an offer to a more talented player...???
Of course that is an option ... and investing $9mil in Dempster-like pitcher would run about $5mil more than Feldman ... or about the same for a Oswalt-like pitcher. Just sayin ... neither option appeal to me as good use of the "Feldman nest egg".
Know you are convinced TEX will part ways with Feldman this off season. We'll see. Remember for year and a half he was injured and we never heard a peep about it the whole time ... and TEX could easily restructure an extension that incorporates the $9mil across the new term.
At his age guys want years ... so he'll be very open to reducing that 2013 outlay in favor of a 2 year flatter extension. IMO. We will see.
how about trading for much better starter and using that extra money on his contract?
Sure ... of course that works. What were you going to trade to get this "much better starter"? That's just another cost you got to factor in.

Considering that this time last year no one on this board could have predicted that we would get Dempster for a couple of heavily buried minor leaguers, I'll just have to say that where there is a will there is a way.
I'm in the camp that there is no way we pay Feldman for next year the way it is structured currently. If you ask me to tell you who we will replace him with, I can't make that call. But he is not worth $9M and we have other places that we can use that money. Maybe we don't replace him with anyone from another team. Maybe we move Ross into the lineup, bring up Perez, or any number of options.
I know he wants more years, but $9M will bring Nap back next year and for all his shortcomings I'd rather have him back at $9M than Scooter. We have pitching options, we have few catcher options.
saw on the MLB network that the scrubs on there say that we're interested in one of the Toronto catcher prospects
