Didn't Quentin get a WS ring with the ChiSox? If so, I can imagine why he signed the extension with the Padres. Guaranteed money (decent enough contract) to play in front of his hometown and living in a nice area that he grew up in. He really doesn't need to "prove" anything else in his career, so the thought of playing for his (probable) favorite team growing up can be enticing.

Sucks for the Giants though (assuming they had interest, like sfsg was saying).

Nope, he's ringless. He was traded from the D-Backs in the 2007 offseason to ChiTown. He has accomplished very little in terms of hardware in his career.

Here's my latest take on the 2013 roster:

Under Contract
Zito - 20
Tim - 20
Cain - 21
Lopez - 4
Panda - 6
Tron - 5
Bum - 1
Arb Eligible, best guess
Weez - 5 (they'll have to cut and re-sign him for this)
KCYa - 4
Romo - 3
Nate - 2
Hensley - 2
Buster - 2 (I see a long term deal similar to MadBums)
Blanco - 1
Arias - 0.5
Free Agents, best guess
Melky - 15
Freddy - 0
Affeldt - 0
Oxy - 0
Riot - 2
Weed - 0
Penny - 1
Team Controlled, all making about 0.5
Kontos, Belt, Craw, Chez3, Christian, Peggs

That's 24 guys and a total payroll of 118.5MM. Add in Huffers $2MM buyout and it's 120.5. I think the budget will be in the $135/140MM range, so that leaves an infield roster spot and the funds to get one strong FA. This FA could be and IF or an OF. The roster as I've set it up:

IF: Belt, Riot, Craw, Panda, Arias
OF: Nate, Blanco, Melky, Christian, Peggs

Obviously, a FA OF would replace Christian or Peggs (n.b this could be Oxy, but I doubt it). A FA 2B would send Riot to the bench. I can't see us adding a FA starter at C, 1B, SS, 3B, SP.

2013 FAs --
2B: Izturis, Johnson, Lopez
OF: Upton, Quentin, Swisher, Young

Kelly Johnson and/or Upton/Quentin would work.

So, Pence pretty much turns into Upton/Quentin. Pence is arbitration eligible for the final time, but there is a chance at a contract extension. Nate is gone, so we were both right tzill (Gone as I said, in 2 weeks as you said). Scutaro and Mijares come into the equation as well (Scutaro is a FA, Mijares has 2 yrs of control~$2MM). Still think Affeldt is coming back. Looks like payroll could approach $140-$145MM range.

IF-Belt, Riot, Craw, Pablo, Arias, Gillaspie
OF-Pence, Cabrera, Blanco, Christian
C-Buster, Chez3

Thats 24 guys right there at 137.5MM. Looks like we could us another OF (leadoff type......Giants will take a long hard look at Brown I think)

Of course, a lot can change. Buster might get extended, Romo, Weez may be gone, Oxy may return (there's not a starting CF on that roster), Pence could be extended. But thats a rough outlook.

Good stuff. Here was my take on another thread, and it might be interesting to discuss the deltas:

SF Giants Payroll 2013

Starters
Timmy $22.0 fixed
Cain $20.0 fixed
Zito $20.0 fixed
Vogey $5.0 fixed
Bum $.075 fixed

Starters Subtotal $67.75

Bullpen
Lopez $4.25 fixed
Affeldt $4.0 FA
Romo $2.5 FA
Casilla $2.5 FA
3 others $3.0 FA

Bullpen Subtotal $16.25

C/IF
Buster $2.5 Arb-1
HSan $0.5 Pre-Arb
Belt $0.5 Pre-Arb
Theriot $1.5 FA
Craw $0.5 Pre-Arb
Panda $5.7 Fixed
Arias $1.0 Arb-1

C/IF Subtotal $12.2

OF
Melky $12.0 FA (1st yr of 5/70 - 12,13,14,15,16)?
Pagan $8.0 FA (1st yr of 3/25)?
Pence $10.0 (Arb-3 or 1st yr of 3/30)?
Blanco $0.5 Pre-Arb
Other $0.5 Pre-Arb

OF Subtotal $31.0

Prelim Total $127.2 (for 24 players)

That leaves room for $10mm-$12mm for other moves: (a quality 2B/SS, a mid-season acquisition, contingency for injury replacement), although I don't know what the total payroll budget is right now. I'm guessing $135-$140mm, but that is a WAG on my part.

Where you are higher (your numbers are first):

Wilson 5 vs 0 - I love Weezy but he is too risky and expensive. Are we forced to offer arb?
Melky 15 vs 12 - I am hoping he takes a 5/70 graduated contract if it's a bit longer (12, 13, 14, 15, 16)
Pence 14 vs 10 - I am probably underpricing him, but if he continues to struggle and we don't make the playoffs...

Where I am higher (your numbers first):

Pagan 0 vs 8 - He has a 2.7 oWAR, he is good for our park, and we are thin in the OF. I think we should offer 3/25-ish. While we have some mid-level prospects, there is no obvious, MLB-ready-now replacement.

I would not like Pagan on a 3 yr deal. We have Brown as well 3 or 4 other guys who MAY be able to do something in that time frame (Payne, Galindo, Parker...)

Maybe not, but if I were him with my 2.7 oWAR, I'd be looking for more than a 2-yr deal. I suspect we are not going to be able to sign him to just 2 years, or he will go elsewhere. Our window with Timmy, Cain, and Vogey is now, not 2-3 years down the road. Also, our OF prospects, aside from some limited success with Blanco, are complete rolls of the dice at the ML level.

Unless we are willing to let Timmy go, and use his salary to build for the future, then not re-signing Pagan in lieu of player development may make more sense to me. But I think we have the pieces now to contend this year and perhaps a few more. All the more so if some of the prospects you mention emerge.

Good points. Brown's first couple of years in the league will be more of a Blanco replacement than a Pagan replacement. That is even more true if the Giants go with Parker or Payne. If the budget isn't big enough, then that is the way it goes, but it would certainly be nice to ease Brown into the 4th OF spot in 2014. Rep.

I just realized that I never responded to this post and I intended to. That's crazy to me then that Quentin would sign 3 years with a team that looks to be a team that will be perennial cellar dwellers. The Padres ownership must have convinced him that they're going to start upping the payroll and being more competitive.....otherwise, it would seem that Quentin doesn't care that much at all about winning a WS ring.

Maybe hometown feelings/family proximity, etc trump that. Also, they just got new owners so maybe there was indeed a message sent from the new group that they'd try harder to put a good team out there.

With all the new ownership the NL West is going to get tougher.

For sure, family trumps all. I was just wondering why he wouldn't wait until FA and maybe try and sign with one of the LA teams or something (although the Angels OF looks to be pretty set as well as 1B). I'm just happy he's not a Doghair. :D

And I think you're right about the ownership. I thought I read somewhere that they were going to try and invest a little more back into fielding a better team.

An O'Malley has an agreement to buy the Pads - it has to be approved by the other MLB owners.

Technicality.

The only reason the previous potential buyers did not get approved by the other owners was because it was headed by Jeff Moorad. No way the owners were going to let an ex-pitbull agent into their club.

The O'Malleys are already card-carrying members of their group.

Oh, I fully expect it to be approved - I just won't say "it's sold" or "the new owners" until it's official.

And I shouldn't have said "an O'Malley"; I should have said "a business group of which Peter O'Malley is a part" - it's not going to be a "family-owned business".
