TP not sure just because we sign a guy we lose the comp pick. Amount of money difference will still warrant the pick. As money of the two contracts seems to be biggest factor in the equation.

As you look back at prior years and the comp picks, you do see teams lose four and sign four, yet they still get high comp picks.
I agree there's multiple factors, but at this point any guy we sign either loses or lowers our comp pick. We basically have the first comp pick awarded if we stand pat till after the draft. We can sign veterans that other teams cut without altering the comp pick matrix, so that's how we plug the holes that we don't fill in the draft. Then, next year, instead of being down a couple of picks, we end up having a few extra picks.

No team loses 4, signs 4, and gets a high comp pick, unless they lose 4 starters, and sign 4 back-ups. Remember it offsets by a year, so a team can be active in free agency and still get the comp picks from the previous year...

Maybe this article will help somewhat to clear up this so-called issue of signing FA's this year. It seems to me that Mayhew actually some quality perspective on 2016 comp picks that we'd likely receive in relation to signing other teams FA's.

Detroit Lions could load up on comp NFL draft picks next year

The Lions are in line to get multiple compensatory picks in the 2016 draft, after losing Ndamukong Suh and Nick Fairley in free agency and finding their replacements through alternative means.

They traded fourth- and fifth-round picks this year for Haloti Ngata and signed non-tendered restricted free agent Tyrunn Walker, and neither move factors into the formula the league uses to dole out extra draft picks.

The Lions waded into free agency this year with comp picks clearly in mind.

Before signing Walker, they were close to a deal with defensive tackle Kendall Langford, who was cut by the St. Louis Rams last month. Among the free agent offensive linemen they've pursued is guard Justin Blalock, who was released by the Atlanta Falcons.

Because they were cut, neither player would impact the Lions' ability to add comp picks.

Certainly, you think about those things," Lions general manager Martin Mayhew said.
I did not know Blaylock was cut, thoguth he was just a regular-old free agent. If that's the case I really hope w're able land him if we don't draft a guard or center. Kind of the same lines as Mosley for me- I'd rather see a high draft pick at the position, but Blaylock would be an acceptable short-term solution if not...

How do you not see how fucking bad Mayhew is? Middle of the pack?? No, he's the worst.

For the past FIVE YEARS Mayhew has had the no.1 WR in the NFL AND the no.1 DT in the NFL, both future HOFmers, and he's got NOTHING to show for it.

SUB .500 record
0 NFL North titles
0 playoff wins

Why?? Because he sucks at putting pieces around the 2 HOFmers that fell into his lap.

How many Superbowls do the Patriots, Packers or a dozen other teams have over 5 years if they had Suh and Calvin???

No GM has done less with more than Martin Mayhew.

You guys crack me up. Mayhew signs "over-priced" free agents in the past, and you shit on him for not being more like the Patriots, Ravens, or Packers, who generally ignore free agency. This year Mayhew doesn't touch free agency- all but assuring us an extra 3rd rounder next year for Suh leaving, and he's an idiot for it. But he's also an idiot for trading away two super-ultra, franchise-saving 4th and 5th round picks for a 5 time All Pro to help replace Suh. So while those two picks are too valuable to give up for a player of Ngata's caliber, and Mayhew is an idiot for giving them up, you're also calling him an idiot for not signing players of lesser ability than Ngata in free agency, even though that would have meant giving up that 3rd round comp pick for Suh. You're basically talking out of both sides of you mouth on that one- valuing two mid-round picks more than a 5 time All-Pro, while simultaneously valuing lesser free agents as being more valuable than a 3rd round pick.

I'm starting to realize it's not Mayhew that you guys hate- it's the concept of a GM you can't handle. These guys have to make decisions, and when they don't make the exact decision you want every time on every player and every draft pick, you start to build up hatred for them, because you've got yourselves convinced you could do a better job. I really think if you guys were Seahawks fans you'd hate Schnieder, Super Bowl be dammed, or if you were a Packers fan (god forbid) you'd hate Thompson, etc. It doesn't seem to matter how successful a team is, I see these GM-attacking posts on every team board. It's a pretty crazy phenomenon, imo, but it's gotta be something in the human condition since it also seems so universal across every team.

And I'd like to add that I think Mayhew has been a mediocre GM so far. I think I've developed a reputation as a Mayhew-lover because I defend him against baseless trash-talk, but at the same time I've never said I think he's a top-ten talent in the small world of NFL GMs. But mediocre is a lot better than bottom-of-the-barrel, which he is not.

Its true. Anyone who hates any player, GM or coach will always find anything to criticize them about or come up with events that are bad (Ngata trade)but wouldn't really like it either if it never happened. If a report came out that Mayhew rejected an opportunity to trade for Ngata, giving up the two picks, fans would bash him for that.

But in the end, it all comes down to how people are in general. They think they know everything. Lol.

I did some reading up on Ted Thompson, and I realized the guy was hated by the fan base throughout the first several years because of the things he was doing. The best thing to ever happen to that team was getting the opportunity to draft Rogers while Farve was still there. Their success with that alone has put Thompson among the best GMs.

I find calm and rational to be more convincing than anger-fueled rants, so I'm afraid we're not going to see eye-to-eye on this one.

We could possibly do better than Mayhew, that's a given. However, the odds tell us that we're more likely to do worse if we fired and replace him. Good GMs are just as rare and every bit as valuable as franchise QBs; they're not just laying around waiting to be hired.

Mayhew has got a pretty good team together right now coming off an 11-5 season, do we really want to roll the dice on bringing in a new GM right now?

Under Mayhew, the Lions have gone 40-56 and have only been over .500 twice, with 0 playoff wins and 0 division titles in his six years leading the franchise.

I'm pretty sure after the debacle drafts Mayhew had in 2010 and 2011, drafting known injury guys like Best, Titus head-case, then Broyles in 2012, he's seen firsthand that those were choices he'd probably not take risks on, if he had to do it all over again.

He's attempting to right a wrong and has stated so in some of the most recent media published articles by Detroit Lions.com and the Freep.

The pre-season injuries to LeShourse and VanNoy. They happen to many a team in the NFL. Dallas' LB Sean Lee has been injured both of the last two seasons as well as Houston LB Cushing come to mind, even though both of those didn't happen in their rookie season.

Whoopee, a third rounder(after the real third rounder is done) in NEXT YEARS draft. And don't inject your feelings on anything Lions as a judgement of how anybody else sees anything because you are incapable of believing anything isn't absolute perfect and brilliant. There is as many of those "human condition" posters out there as well.

Mediocre is mediocre for crying out loud. If you are happy being a mediocre team with mediocre results that's your choice.

And knock off the fucking superlatives you have to add to every damn post. It's not baseless bashing simply because you don't agree with it. There are people out there, and I'm fucking one of them, who doesn't take well to you putting forth your opinion by telling me mine is baseless or I am talking out of both sides of my mouth. On top of that the basis you put forth in making that comment isn't anything I even said, which makes it that much more infuriating.

You have become like a politician running for office. You don't seem to have anything to say as to why you are the best candidate all you have to say is why the other guy shouldn't be. Try telling me why you are content with a mediocre GM. I've been more than clear as to why I'm not. So why are you or anyone else?

That seems like an awfully obvious double-standard. You're not exactly Mr. Niceguy, you know...

Agree on less with more. To say the worst throughout his tenure, I look no further than your Miami Dolphins. As Jeff Ireland flat out tried to Millen the franchise. The new guy is making changes and good ones in a quick fashion. I am not even including Suh in that mix either. Need to see what the future money (cap) situation is for them, before I say Suh was a good signing unless they win the title this year. Then well worth it IMO. Don't see that happening, so the future holds the cards on that decision.

With Ireland I know second worst is lowest he can be rated.

I don't recall ever saying anything with the Lions is anywhere near perfect, nor have I ever accused Mayhew of being brilliant (possibly right off the bat with that Roy Williams trade, I guess, but never since). I think Dr. Double-Standard would be a more fitting screen name for you...

Show me where I come off at you that brings about a response that warrants you calling my thoughts baseless and out of both sides of my mouth.

That statement is 100% correct and would be universally agreed with on this board.

And Mr. Cry-baby would be yours. As always the post you bold is AFTER you started in with your comments. You start EVERY single one of your e-pissing matches and then bitch about some ridiculous double standard bullshit when it comes back at you. That has been told to you numerous different times

I'm not sure I called your thought, specifically, baseless. When I say "they" or "them" I think you're assuming that's you every time, or even most times, and it's not.

Here's another 100% guarantee, one day Watt will make more than Suh. Because his contract will come due first. That's how the NFL works.

I'll take this bet. How much? Seeing as how Watt just signed a 6 year extension last year, which doesn't kick in for two years -- he will be 33 or 34 before he hits the open market, unless Houston releases him, which means he is no longer a dominant DL.

How much do I win?

TP not sure just because we sign a guy we lose the comp pick.
I believe, the # of comp picks is based on how many FAs we lose compared to how many we sign. Like if we've lost 3 and sign 2, we will get one comp pick. But how they determine which player will be factored in that comp pick is beyond me.
