7th and 5th for McCoy and 6th why??

We're basically trading our late 7th round pick for McCoy and moving back a total of 9 spots by trading our 5th rounder for their 6th rounder. Not overly excited about McCoy's arm strength, but can't argue that we'd find anyone with relative value in this year's draft in the 7th round.

49ers trade to Browns:
5th round #164 overall
7th round #237 overall?

49ers receive from Browns:
Colt McCoy ($1.5M cap hit)
6th round #173 overall

Not a bad deal, since we basically got him for nothing. Not to mention, Jim Harbaugh had to sign off on this deal, so if he's good with bringing in Colt McCoy, then it's probably a good move.

I don't mind getting McCoy and his smaller salary (for a QB) for basically a 7th and sliding down a few spots from the 5th round pick. I know he's short, but like his feet and his toughness. A decent backup to have along with Tolzien.

It will be interesting to see how soon they draft a developmental guy with 3 QB's on the roster.

They could still draft another QB late this year. That would be a very similar situation to last year where going into training camp all of them know one definitely gets cut.

Can anyone do the math for me, here? This is essentially a McCoy for ??? when you figure out value?

For example, if the Alex Smith trade was a 2nd this year and a 3rd next year, someone said that was equivalent to a 26th pick of the first round and a little bit more if the conditional pick becomes a second rounder. The second rounder this year is like a first next year in value? The second/third next year is like a 3rd/4th this year?

According to the draft value chart, it's essentially McCoy for about the 20th pick in the 7th round.

So it's McCoy for nothing.

Yeah, I wouldn't have been too excited if they gave up anything, but giving up basically nothing? Impressive. Considering it has the Harbaugh seal of approval you have to like it.

Whoever was running the Browns last few years was a real idiot though, that's for sure. So many wasted picks.

April fools? No problem here if it's for a 6th or 7th because he'll actually make the team. I know Chris Pozz will be thrilled with this one...

I have to chime in because I don't want people to get the wrong idea about that word "thrilled". My thoughts from another thread:

That is one of the worst sounding moves I've seen the 49ers make in a long, long time. Yuck! He's one of my least favorite QBs to come into the NFL since 1998.

Alot of people on the ESPN boards were making fun of me when he came out because I was relentless about how awful I thought it'd be if anybody drafted him (anywhere in the draft).

I also told alot of the ESPN regulars that if Colt McCoy ever developed into a top 16 or above average NFL QB that I'd legally have my name changed to Colt McCoy. What a disgusting move mentally for me! Yuck!

I want to scream from all rooftops that I am so disgusted by this move (in a fan way). I want to go on and on and on and on like an emotional fan would but I won't do that because I can't stand when other fans do that. I'll just simply say that this was a disgusting sounding move and one player I don't expect Harbaugh, Roman and company to be able to mold into really much of anything as far as somebody who isn't being counted on to play heavily.

I could see us using McCoy as trade bait during the draft if things don't go well for a QB needy team.

We give up not being able to draft a player in the 7th who most likely won't make the roster, and doesn't even have a real decent shot for the PS.

We have another regular 7th. Plus two 7th comps that can't be traded. So the 7th given up is way more worthless than usual because we'll be forced to look at two other similar players (minimum). There's just not that many spots for ST's contributors this year, and we have guys like Darius coming back who will make it even harder. Now we also don't even need to look to draft any other QB backups if we don't want to. We can for competition, but can instead lock in a position like backup ILB, or just trade the pick for a higher pick next year.

I knew you really hated him as a player, but am surprised that you still hate this particular move so much. The impression I get is this move has Harbaugh's fingerprints all over it for competition. I always got the impression that Baalke strongly prefers QB's with a strong arm who can work the ball downfield, over the typical west coast type QB's like Colt.

I guess I don't get some of the bashing of the McCoy move; first of all, I trust Harbaugh to judge whether or not McCoy can be a serviceable backup for the price, it doesn't seem like they gave up very much, and I don't think they'd do better for the price they gave up. I really respect Pozz and his opinions, but I don't get the antipathy. I guess I would just say it's not like we're second guessing Mike Nolan's or Rich Kotite's evaluation of a quarterback, it's Jim Freakin' Harbaugh!

1.5 mil for what could potentially be a 3rd string QB seems pricy, especially when you throw in a 5th and 7th round pick. Oh well, who cares, its not my money.

Nothing is set in stone, we don't even know if McCoy will be on the opening day roster... It is a low risk move, no big deal...
