The fanbase is going crazy over this signing.

And the Giants 100% deserve every bit of criticism they are getting. Not because they should have matched that contract. Not because they dropped the ball in any way in negotiations with Shohei. But because they told the fanbase they were going all in on him. After telling the fanbase they were going all in on Judge. After telling the fanbase they were going all in on Harper.

You don’t tell your wife that you got her the biggest, greatest, nicest, most beautiful present for Christmas before you actually bought it. That is just setting up the guest room without actually setting up the guest room.

The Giants made this bed they are now sleeping in by setting impossible expectations with their fans.

I'll be joining this craziness if they whiff on Yamamoto. In my mind, there is no reason that they should not sign him, if it comes down to who offers the most money. I doubt Yamamoto agrees to the crazy deferrals that Ohtani did.

But the doggies won’t need to defer his payments. They have 70M to play with now.

I really hope FZ doesn't target Lee to be the big free agent splash. It seems that many baseball people feel he is better in the corners and I really have my doubts that his .900+ OPS will translate to anything more than .750 in the MLB.
From MLBTR:
MLBTR's Market Assessment continues with a look at some of the mid-tier position players. Darragh McDonald will soon run through the suitors for Lourdes Gurriel Jr., while I'll take a look at the market for Jung Hoo Lee.

The KBO star is a high-contact lefty bat. He hits free agency coming off his worst season in three years. Lee hit .318/.406/.455 with six homers across 387 plate appearances before his platform year was cut short by season-ending ankle surgery. He'd posted an OPS north of .900 in each of the preceding three seasons, including an MVP-winning .349/.421/.575 showing in 2022.

Despite the disappointing platform, Lee has a track record of success in Korea. He turned 25 last summer, making him one of the youngest free agents of note. Evaluators with whom MLBTR spoke last month suggested he might be best suited in a corner, yet it's not a given he won't be able to stick in center field. A team that views him as a viable fit up the middle could consider him an average or better regular.

MLBTR predicted a five-year, $50MM deal at the beginning of the offseason. The Athletic's Dennis Lin wrote yesterday that some within the industry feel Lee's camp could take aim at the five years and $90MM secured by Masataka Yoshida last offseason. (As was the case with Yoshida, an MLB team would also have to pay a posting fee to the player's Asian club.)

Even if Lee comes up short of Yoshida, he's in line for a solid multi-year pact. Which teams might make that happen? All payroll projections courtesy of Roster Resource.

I 100% expect Yamamoto to sign with the doggies at this point. I will be floored if he goes elsewhere.
I think the Mets are a possibility since they have Senga in the rotation. I would think, if Yamamoto is serious about playing with another Japanese player, that would be a big draw for him. The question will be, though, does Cohen want to shell out that kind of money?

At this point in the offseason, I'm already expecting it to be disappointing. FZ is going to give way more money that necessary to sign a player that probably won't perform up to expectations (Lee or Bellinger are the two names off the top of my head). I'm expecting it but I'm still not ready for it.

SF doom loop narrative killing Giants in free agency, Buster Posey says

“Something I think is noteworthy, something that unfortunately keeps popping up from players and even the players’ wives is there’s a bit of an uneasiness with the city itself, as far as the state of the city, with crime, with drugs,” Posey said in an interview with The Athletic’s Andrew Baggarly. “Whether that’s all completely fair or not, perception is reality. It’s a frustrating cycle, I think, and not just with baseball. Baseball is secondary to life and the important things in life. But as far as a free-agent pursuit goes, I have seen that it does affect things.”

I wonder how (if at all) this will play in the pursuit of Yamamoto, who, by the way, just met with the Dodgers. There were some players on hand, including Ohtani.

Sadly it just might. Plus Ohtani being there I’m sure helps.
Dodgers getting the big fish on the market shows they are serious to him. Being 2nd means nothing to him, yes Giants made the improvement with our new manager but that was before they interviewed him, so he didn’t see any player improvements until he might have heard about Lee yesterday.

I just don’t see a way we can get him unless we somehow over pay by quite a bit and that still might not do it.

Our city rep is probably worse than both Detroit and Atlanta atm. That coupled with high state tax and a bad infield rep is killing us this year

And the funny thing is that, for MLB cities, we are #10 in crime rate.

LA is worse.

But, as Buster says, perception is reality

Living about an hour from LA, I don't doubt it. California, in general, is getting a pretty bad rap and, from what I've seen and heard, its not too far off but it does seem exaggerated. And most large cities have their issues.

Chicago, LA, Detroit, Miami all much worse than SF.

But the way it's reported we are on the edge of Amageddon.

Holy shit.

Over on Reddit, someone posted a thread about whether Joc would be back or not.

I thought I hated that dude. That community absolutely despises the guy. Wow.

I wonder if FZ has inquired with Atlanta about trading either Stripling, Conforto and/or Haniger to them? They seem to like taking on underwater contracts from other teams for little to no return.
