Sorry @Shanemansj13 , I misunderstood what you were saying earlier then. I will add this as well though. If he helps us win the division and play at home in the play-offs and the team can get to the NFCCG, that 2nd rounder ends up being really late 2nd so almost 3rd anyway. That's my hope.

I think this comes down to the quality of next year's draft. I'm eyeballing it now and only seeing 4 1st round edge prospects with 3 kinda in the mix. Odds of getting a Sweat type of player at pick 35 or so is probably slim although I do think you could get a defensive starter on a rookie contract at that spot.

Not the best move but if you're desperate then its the type of move you make.

Yeah....a 2nd isn't an expensive price to pay at all.

To me the conversation was all about needing at least a first rounder, so it moved to what about the other guy you have there.

Sweat now will get $30M AAV or close to it. He wouldn't have gotten that on the open market IMO. But now that a team has money in the pot already, they have to make sure to see it all the way to the river. And they have to do it before he hits FA or else he can peak around for a better spot which means they have to give him more just to put pen to paper before FA starts for a dollar value over what he really should be getting paid.

In a league where you only can sign about 4 or 5 players to top value contracts, neither Sweat or Williams are guys that I would want my team handing out those top contracts too. And I REALLY dont want them to be handing over valuable draft assets for the right to do so.

Every Washington fan I have heard loves this trade. Sweat is so overrated, he has never had double digit sacks and has averaged 7.25 sacks a season. He is not a pass rusher yet he will be paid, at 28 when the season starts, like he is an elite pass rusher. For that the Bears gave up a very high 2nd.

And it frees up those 2 early 1st rounders for help at other positions. If they decide to restart the clock at QB, they can still trade Fields for more early draft capital.

Jaylon Johnson is a better player than Sweat imo so I guess we'll find out what the Bears are doing based on what they do with him.

Williams was a smart move. They also added Frank Clark. They are clearly trying to fortify themselves on defense with Purdy's 3 game skid in SF. Trying to win the NFC West and have a playoff run.

Packers LB Gary agrees to $107.5M extension

Literally in just the last couple of day Rashad Gary just signed a 4 year $27 AAV contract.

Those two entered the league in the exact same year. Gary has 27 career sacks. Sweat has 35.

It is literally the contract template that will be used during negotiation with Sweat's agent demanding a slight hike this offseason not to hit FA.
