There are some quality FAs still available out there.

S Justin Simmons
S Jamal Adams
S Q.Diggs
Edge J.Clowney
OT Charles Leno
TE Ross Dwelley
OL James Hurst
DE Emmanuel Ogbah
DT H.Ridgeway

With the way the draft worked out, I don't see us bringing in a safety (barring injury), but we could sure use the help at TE (as Latu was/is a bust) and Leno is competent at OT. I remember Ridgeway working out pretty well for us at DT too.

First, a team has to lose more players to FA than it signs. Then, a "secret" formula is used to determine what level of comp pick each team gets for each net player lost. Most teams have the formula just about figured out.

The questions are these:
-how many qualifying free agents did the Niners lose?
-how many qualifying free agents did the Niners sign?
-if the team lose more than it signed, the team gets comp picks and the formula determines what round the comp pick is
Chase Young played most of the season with Washington, who gets the Comp? Likely the 49ers but interesting situation.

According to Over the Cap, and they usually have a good projection of comp picks, our signing of Floyd cancelled out the loss of Young. But we are still getting 2 or 3 comp picks (Darnold and Weorner and maybe Joseph-Day).
Unless Darnold starts for like 'half' the season, think net free agency will end up close to even.

So the logic (at the time) of getting Young for (essentially) free (he was projected as a 3rd round comp FA) did not come to fruition.

Not a critique (poop happens), just trying to simplify the transaction.
If you look at Chase Young in a vacuum, he didn't seem to finish well enough to garner a 3rd round comp IMO? So yes, we'll likely get less comp than the 3rd rounder projected.

But its not zero comp for Young when taken out of the vacuum, its just that who we signed made up for his comp value. Out of the vacuum is combining all free agents lost versus all gained.

Following the draft, don't see us adding any more Free Agents save for injury later in OTA/TC.

Believe we've hit the 90 man limit yesterday, so the intent is to first see what we have in rookies and UDFA's?

The Niners would get the comp pick, but it looks like our signing of Floyd cancelled out the loss of Young.

Yeah, at this point not seeing comp picks unless Darnold has a good year............by his standards.

I stand corrected and glad I am. The 3rd rounder is from the Ran Carthon-DeMeco Ryans hirings, but they project 2 more comps. A 5th and 7th is better than nothing. :-)

Projected compensatory picks: One in Round 3; one in Round 5; one in Round 7.

Key free-agent losses: Chase Young (Saints), Sam Darnold (Vikings), Javon Kinlaw (Jets), Charlie Woerner (Falcons), Sebastian Joseph-Day (Titans), Clelin Ferrell (Commanders).

Key free-agent additions: Leonard Floyd, Yetur Gross-Matos, Isaac Yiadom, Jordan Elliott.

The 49ers have absolutely feasted upon compensatory picks, racking up 17 over the past three seasons, including six third-rounders tied directly to minority head coaching and general manager candidates who were hired from their staff. This year, the 49ers will receive their final third-round compensatory pick from the Ran Carthon-DeMeco Ryans hirings in 2023. San Francisco lost six qualifying players and signed four qualifiers, creating two potential compensatory picks to go with that third-rounder.

Depending on whether or not UDFA Anderson flashes in TC, I would LOVE to see Ridgeway plugging holes in the interior of our DL. Our run defense last season was a (no pun intended) huge hole last year and we were getting run on as soon as Ferrell and Armstead went down. Neither of those guys are back this year so IMO anyone that helps to anchor our run defense would be awesome!

Anyone have a good link for available TEs in FA?

Don't think we're going to sign any notable free agent TE? At this point you might as well see what you got in OTA first, because those are also unknowns.

It would've been nice to have drafted a TE with more potential than Pline, but even if Kittle is rested more than usual, we still have other weapons. We might have to limit some of the plays where Kittle blocks well, but even then the offense should do well.

The FS or deep, centerfield, cover 1 safety is currently Ji'Ayir Brown, backed up by George Odum. If Talanoa Hufanga starts the season on PUP, its possible that Odum is starting FS if rookie Malik Mustapha is not ready for prime time. Odum is a ST ace but instantly becomes the biggest weakness on an otherwise strong defense. If this is the Super Bowl window, John Lynch needs to upgrade FS before Labor Day. Justin Simmons would be the chef's kiss.

Yes, Justin Simmons would help a lot and for the reason you cited. We don't have a proven cover Safety.

That said, I'd spend the cap space on our own players whether on BA or an extension similar (not same) as CMC. We have some quality players scheduled for free agency next season, so consider extending one or two and if unable, save some for Purdy.

One of the things that Paraag has been an absolute G with has been extending our players AND lowering their cap numbers on year 1 and sometimes 2. I think we could extend BA and still pay Justin Simmons on a 1yr deal.

Yes, whatever they're doing with the contracts it SEEMS to be stretching further out? They have already started pushing money down the road, but seems like it won't be a "mass exodus" after Purdy's contract? Anyway, the key is having good draft classes so we'll see how it goes for draft picks including 2 classes back.

If they do end up signing Simmons no problem here, we could use a cover Safety.

Lots of love for Leonard Floyd by Coach Kocurek and others on the 49ers. The question I have: why didn't the 49ers sign Floyd earlier? He had a 1-year, $7 million deal with the Bills a year ago. If he is ALL THAT, why not sign him when Ebukam's deal expired?

IIRC, the Niners were putting some chips into the Drake Jackson basket and wanting him to take over opposite of Bosa with Clelin Ferrell to take over for base downs. Ferrell's contract was for like 1yr/3 mil.

Sure, Drake...coming off a mundane, 3 sack rookie season (2022) and Clelin Ferrell ( on 2 sacks in 2022) over this Leonard Floyd that Kocurek is praising like better than Dee Ford. As it was, this approach led to trading draft picks for Randy Gregory and Chase Young. I'm just asking why, if you knew how special Floyd had been and would be, and he only cost $7 million, how do you not do that? I know we are in the dog days of summer, and these "hype" interviews are inevitable. But, at $7 million, I think Floyd would have made like much easier for Steve Wilks and Nick Bosa last year.
