Pulp fiction is certainly good. Samuel Jackson is just awesome in that film. Did he nominated for that role?

For me Shawshank > Pulp Fiction > Gump.
I'd have Pulp Fiction a 10/10, Shawshank a 10/10 and Gump a 9.5/10. Shawshank is really just a clever and concise contemporary remake of the Count of Monte Cristo type story. It puts a nice tidy bow on everything at the end and really owes a lot to the casting of Morgan Freeman.

I actually think Pulp Fiction was better that both

Easily.

Shawshank was a great crowd-pleaser but Gump was pure hokum. Rocky was more hokum and it winning over Network and Taxi Driver was ridiculous. But, like Spielberg, Scorsese never really got his due from the academy.

Then there was Chariots of Fire over Raiders, Ordinary People over Raging Bull, In The Heat of The Night over Bonnie and Clyde and The Graduate, My Fair Lady over Dr Strangelove... Kubrick never got his due from them either. Slumdog Milionaire sucked too, but that was a weak year. There are many more.. they've gotten it wrong a lot.

1997-Titanic
Nowhere near the movie that "As Good as it Gets" or "Good Will Hunting" were.

Perfect example of how everyone got caught up in a cry baby woman's movie and special effects.

Martin Scorsese must laugh at some of the choices.

Dances With Wolves over GoodFellas? Scorsese's flick is still the best film I've seen since it came out.
Ordinary People over Raging Bull? A crime almost equal to said above.
Rocky over Taxi Driver? A precursor of what was to come

2001: A Space Odyssey not even getting nominated/losing to Oliver! was about as bad as anything going.

I agree with you even though I like Dances with Wolves, Ordinary People and Rocky. Love 2001. The better films didn't win.

It's clear a good portion of the academy like feel-good movies. Movies that are disturbing and violent have that going against them from the start (even though plenty have won despite that)

I loves me some Kubrick (used to have the C. Orange avatar forever), but 2001, and that endless 'we're moving through space, smoke a doobie and go 'wow,' shot ruined it for me. Fvck off Stanley.

I disagree, hurt locker was spectacular. Can't remember another movie that had me on edge as much as hurt locker the first time I saw it.

Def beats Avatar if you want to make a case for another movie I'd listen but Hurt Locker was worthy IMO.

Pulp fiction is vastly overrated

Whoever suggested frost/Nixon sure that was OK for falling asleep to

Inglorious bastards had too much dialogue, Quentin Tarrentino loves to get in the way of great movies he makes by adding a hour of unnecessary, boring scenes. Django being the exception.

Yes. His Kill Bill series are overrated for that reason.

While there are some great scenes, there also a good deal of crap where all you can say is "*wow* that's a lot of blood".

It IS a long film but it's also the first modern science fiction movie too.

And how did 1960 Spartacus not win, and didn't even get nominated.
The Apartment with Jack Lemon won that year.

I wouldn't go that far... SPR is a bit overrated because the overall story doesn't make sense. Two brothers die (basically at the same time), so they decide to sacrifice an elite platoon just to find the third brother? Very farfetched. If you by the premise, the movie is very well acted and executed.

That being said, just the Omaha Beach sequence deserves 10 Oscars. 20 years have passed since the movie was first released, and IMO that sequence is still the finest battle scene ever filmed.

In 2010 Avatar was robbed of the Oscar by a film that only earned a measly $21 million globally, Hurt Locker, because it was time for a woman to get Best director. Perhaps also somehow to pay tribute to our troops in Iraq. Political bullshit.

The idea was stolen from the Sullivan Brothers, right?

Sullivan brothers - Wikipedia.

To me the classic Spielberg ending with the air force winning at the last second cheapened the movie somewhat but It's a great film and no Shakespeare in Love was NOT better.

I liked Shakespeare in Love. It was a fun romantic film with the Shakespeare "hook". But how many remember much about it now?

Avatar was overrated imo. Great special effects, weak story..
