Forrest Gump is not in same universe as Shawshank.

I wondered how long it would be before this one was mentioned.

Shawshank stands the test of time much better than Forrest Gump, however people forget how advanced and unique Forrest Gump seemed at the time. Yeah, it's not a big deal when they cgi people into historical events - now. But when Forrest Gump came out, it was pretty damn awesome and unique.

And then the character is pretty awesome. Idiot Savant that somehow manages to find himself meeting big people in history and being at big events in history with simplicity and an inability to fail at anything he does. Falls off a little at the end, but it was a much much bigger deal than Shawshank at the time.

Shawshank is a great movie with a good storyline that's an all time classic and would rank higher as an all time classic over Forrest Gump, but you have to take into account the times. And still, Forrest Gump is going to be in that list, but I think would be behind Shawshank.

Yeah, that is a good take on it.

I think Shawshank and Forrest Gump are on the same level. I can watch either over and over. Both have the elements it takes to make a great classic.

This thread can go on forever. With that, Shakespeare in Love was a very good movie, but SPR was a masterpiece that year. Hollywood hates Spielberg.

There's a good group of people that just don't like war movies.. Just too unpleasant for them. I still have friends that haven't seen SPR.

I think Shawshank is way better than Gump. Gump is certainly likable enough and Hanks is great as usual but Shawshank is taking on bigger themes than "Life is a box of chocolates" and "Forrest Gump introduces jogging to the world."

Yeah, yeah it's definitely a relationship film but it's a great one. All I can say is that there was no surprise when Annie Hall won. Certain films fit their times perfectly and Annie Hall was one of those films.
...lol,.....was this around the same time Woody married his "adopted" daughter....Soon-Yee ...?!

Umm. More like 20 years later. 1977 vs 1996.. It might be time to put the cooking sherry away, Mother.. ;)

Annie Hall is actually a film based on his relationship with Diane Keaton. She won an Oscar for that role.

Have you ever seen "Cop Land"....one of the most underrated movies in a long time. Stallone did an excellent job.
An all around great film and, yes, Stallone actually gave a great performance.

I actually think Pulp Fiction was better that both

Pulp fiction is certainly good. Samuel Jackson is just awesome in that film. Did he nominated for that role?

For me Shawshank > Pulp Fiction > Gump.

For me, all 3 movies are a 10/10.
It just comes down to personal taste as to 1..2..3

For quite some time now, I know I'm likely going to hate the Best Picture winner so I skip it entirely.
