Prior to that episode, Chris Rock had just done another movie joke about another Hollywood couple, Javier Bardem & his wife Penelope Cruz. (which was laughed off by both as a funny harmless joke)
So either Smith has uber thin skin and felt the need to somehow overreact and prove his manhood to his wife..or Jada is just overly sensitive/felt dissed, and wanted to be protected and defended by her man in public.

This isn’t the first time Rock has joked about the couple. When he hosted the Oscars in 2016, he said, “Jada Pinkett Smith boycotting the Oscars is like me boycotting Rihanna’s panties — I wasn’t invited!”

There is bad blood between the 2.

right...it was a guy who made another crack on Jada a few years back.

I agree, an overreaction and Smith even recognized that in his speech. "Love makes you do crazy things."

He saw Jada's face and he reacted because he saw that it hurt her. Isn't that the chivalrous thing to do? You defend your lady.

Smith should have challenged him to duel for mocking her about her condition on national television.

Exactly. We're not talking about some rude asshole at a bar or restaurant. During the Oscars, actors are going to get made fun of. Particularly those up for awards. That's to be expected. The Smiths knew that when they got there. I get that Jada has been public with her alopecia struggles and insecurities--but hell, the hosts have made fun of people's arrests, drug habits, embarrassments, and eating disorders. If Smith would not allow his wife to be made fun of, better to stay home.

The saddest part of this is that no one will remember that night as the night Will Smith won his first, and probably only, Oscar.
