No.. it was real. Smith basically confirmed it when he cried his way through his speech for winning best actor. He isn't THAT good of an actor for that to have been an act.

It looked like Will responded to the fact Jada was upset by the joke. At first Will was laughing at it while Jada cringed. Then they cut to Rock .. and we see what Smith did next. I bet if Jada had laughed it off it would have been fine.

At the 2022 Oscars, Will Smith slapped Chris Rock after he made a joke about Smith's wife Jada Pinkett Smith.

The unscripted moment arrived after the comedian joked about Jada Pinkett Smith’s hair loss, a symptom of alopecia. “Jada, love you, G.I. Jane 2, can’t wait to see it,” Rock said, before the actress rolled her eyes. Will appeared to laugh at the joke at first but then walked up onstage, hit Rock, and returned to his seat.

Will Smith, the most OVERRATED actor in the 2000s.... that guy cashed in BIG on the 90s and Fresh Prince. I mean good for him, but ever since the early 00s whenever I see him in a movie I generally write it off as a giant yawn fest.

Jada has been very upfront and vocal about her hair loss issues. That tells me that the issue is fair game for a very lighthearted jab at the Oscars. It isn’t like she is battling cancer or anything.

Either a work, or something very strange. I hope Rock presses charges if it isn’t a work (he won’t).

Evidence it is real…

Smith laughed HYSTERICALLY at the joke initially. If this were a work, he would have known instantly that his wife’s honor had just been assaulted and he would have been steaming from the word go.

Rock REALLY took the hit. That was not a stage slap. That was a wallop. And Rock took it.

Smith’s reaction later. He basically let it overtake his acceptance speech and wondered if he would ever be invited back to an Oscars Awards show.


Evidence it was a work…

The whole situation is just soooo ridiculous. On the harsh meter, the joke was MAYBE a 3/10. The joke, on its own, could have been completely appropriate for the Nickelodeon Kids Choice Awards.

When Smith went on stage, Rock locked his hands behind his back and actually leaned into the smack. He took it, and the smack was real. But he was prepared for it (??).


I am leaning towards this being real. But I will not be surprised to find out in coming days / weeks / months / years that there was at least SOME planning that went into this.

Prior to that episode, Chris Rock had just done another movie joke about another Hollywood couple, Javier Bardem & his wife Penelope Cruz. (which was laughed off by both as a funny harmless joke)
So either Smith has uber thin skin and felt the need to somehow overreact and prove his manhood to his wife..or Jada is just overly sensitive/felt dissed, and wanted to be protected and defended by her man in public.

This isn’t the first time Rock has joked about the couple. When he hosted the Oscars in 2016, he said, “Jada Pinkett Smith boycotting the Oscars is like me boycotting Rihanna’s panties — I wasn’t invited!”

Some have suggested that Chris Rock should file an assault charge on Smith.
Not sure C-Rock would be that petty though..and he probably doesn't think it rises to that particular level anyhow.
He basically stood there and took the slap to the face which really didn't seem to faze him at all.
