Why doesn't Kareem get more love in the GOAT debate?

You could argue he's the best HS player ever, best college player ever and he's definitely got the best resume ever for NBA career

Yet when people talk GOAT he's usually brought up 3rd or 4th

I think he's pretty obviously and easily the GOAT

Is it a a generational thing?

Basically LeBron passed him in the main thing Kareem had as his GOAT argument, being really good for a very long time and the most points ever scored. Now LeBron has that and has been better for longer

But yes many people can’t see past their generation as far as picking the GOAT. So Wilt for super old guys, then Kareem for you guys, then MJ for the next gen, then LeBron

It's weird though

Kareem is top 3 all fine in

Points
Rebounds
Blocks

He's got the most MVPs and the same amount of rings as MJ with more Finals

Like MJ is most peoples 1 but Kareems resume is just way way better overall

I think a lot of it is generational for sure though

I have said this for years. No goat conversation should ever take place without Kareem being mentioned.

Its criminal, i think it's generational. Its tough because I'm in my 40s, and never really personally experience his greatness. I have youtube, nba films and my forefathers who say he was unstoppable with that hook shot. But the Lakers are the real criminals to basically downplay this legend. Shaq is also getting disrespected. Much like all the great centers, he was unstoppable and the league had to change rules. Its a guards game nowadays, I'm not sure if being a post up, 300lb dunker is cool anymore

There are a few reasons.

1. He was too aloof and didn't really get along with the press. Because of that, he has been largely ignored in GOAT convos by them.

2. When he did most of his winning and won 5 of his titles, he was the leader in name only. Magic always called him 'Cap' and would defer to him publicly out of respect...but everyone knew Magic was the leader.

3. His play has been called "joyless" at times and his teams, especially the "pre-Magic" seasons with the Lakers, underachieved with him as the leader.

4. His era was a long time ago and several of the years were when the NBA was a niche sport and about to collapse. By the time the NBA really got big, he was older and overshadowed by Magic and Bird.

His on court resume is as good as anyone, but he just wasn't all that likeable for the first several years of his career. He finally turned a bit of a corner on that when his house burned down, he lost his prized collection of jazz albums and fans started sending albums to build it back up.

I find it more annoying when people start talking about Bill Russell being a Top 5 center of all time. The glorification of winning all those titles with 8-14 teams in the league.

He did beat the greatest player ever so there's some gravitas there.

Because of his height and lack of athleticism compared to jordan. He wasnt flying around dunking on everyone, and was kind of boring.

He should get more love though

He had the most unstoppable weapon in league history, his skyhook.

I hated it. Now excuse me I gotta throw up since he's a legendary Laker.
