I'd take Russell over The Dream, but Olajuwan was a great player as well.

I don't see how what you would take factors into anything here. You taking the FAR lesser player is not really a pro for Russell.

He is very undersized especially for his position, he would be a SF in todays game and who knows the transition his game would have taken in this era but we know he couldnt shoot so most likely he is a bench player in todays game. He was a great defender but his offense was poor.

Aside from passing. You could run an offense through him from the top of the key, which has a lot of value for offense

I didn't see Russell in his prime, but I did see a lot of the Havlachek era...Russell was the epitome of team, he did what his team needed him to do...I think he could've scored more on a lessor team, but he was not the most talent big man...not even close. That said, should not be in this thread imo, he wasn't over rated.

Horry was a role player, Russell was by far the most valuable player on 13 championship teams. The 2 years he DIDN'T win titles over 15 years he was insured.

Russell played 13 years & won 11 rings.

Billy was a measly 6'7" 210 and he couldnt shoot. He used his athleticism well but mainly against poor competition. It helps having a full squad of HOFrs right by his side. OVERRATED

Considering a lot have him way up there I think he is vastly overrated. Maybe he isnt overrated on my list bc he is already way down there

So a clear #2 option on a team that won 6 championships is over rated?

When viewed as a top 10 guy(or better than Hakeem), yes overrated.

Overrated never meant bad, just means people think more of him than he earned.

Horry has a ton of rings too and Horry played with less HOFrs. The rings discussion is only used for the greatest players, something Billy is and never will be a part of

Horry wasn't a starter. And if you don't think the winningest player in NBA history isn't an all time great you're insane.

Russell's 6-10, not 6-7.

Who ever thought of Scottie as a top 10 guy? Or better than Hakeem?

Pippen played in an era where he probably have trouble being in the top 25. So who is rating him so high?

Russell's 6-10, not 6-7.

He also faced Wilt 142 times over 13 years, not to mention quite a few true centers. Interior players today might face a great center 3 or 4 times in a season.

Pippin was maybe the best really long full court defender I've ever seen, and he was an excellent passer and a great finisher. He was not cut out to be the #1 option on offense though.

He was a very good player. I'm just wondering why someone would call him overrated.

Russell played 13 years & won 11 rings.

He won titles in both his jr and sr years at The University Of San Francisco as well, not coincidentally the only titles in school history.

My bad. I misread your comment. I thought you were saying he played 15 years in the NBA. Wasn't even thinking about his college career when I quoted you.

Imo it's tough to really overrate him with all the titles, and his impact on getting them. Trust me I know about the supporting cast, and not many teams being in the league, etc.

Take Russell away from that team and maybe they win half the titles they actually did. The most basic of things that win basketball games...rebound, outlet pass, defend...he excelled at it...the Celtics were known for their vaunted fastbreak offense, with him there was no fastbreak....Auerbach said many times, Russell was the glue of the Celtics.

I was a Kareem/Laker fan growing up and I rooted for any team that played the Celtics.
