Scott Howson:

""This was not a deal we had to do no matter what," he said on a conference call with reporters. "I think it's better that we've done it now. We can all move forward."

Wow Howson..then again he would get hosed in a deal and be happy. He knows he could have got more but decided to just get it done and settle for less.

The Kings offering Bernier and other pieces was a better trade then what the Rags gave up.

Can't believe this is what he was holding out for. Tim Erixson? That was the game changer?

And I know a lot of Pens fans keep saying they don't have to make a retaliatory move...but...I dunno. We have so much freaking cap space.

#RedWings GM Ken Holland: "I talked to Scott Howson a number of times, we did make an offer for Rick Nash."

Speculation is Franzen, Filppula, and a pick was offered for Nash...

is that not a better offer? was he afraid to send him to Detroit?

I thought that too...but I think age may have been a factor too. I'd have to do some research on the length of guys contracts too. I know Franzen's was lengthy...

So they are signing Semin?

I'm no expert (I'm married), but I believe they are shooting Semin out of their hot dog cannon. If I remember correctly.

I guess I'm alone in thinking that Howson didn't completely crap the bed on this one.

1. Dubinsky is 26 years old and one season (where he wasn't used in a very offensive role) removed from a 54 point season. He was outscored by Nash by 12 points that year while being MILES better in his own end of the rink.

2. Anisimov is a skilled guy with some size. Time will tell if he can figure it all out but he'll score 40-50 points at least in his prime. He is a long term fit on the second line.

3. Erixon will probably never be a #1 defenseman but he'll likely be a second pairing guy for a dozen years or so.

4. First rounders are valuable assets. It'll likely be in the 20s but it should help to restock the cupboard.

It's hard to get full value on stars who are publicly wanting out. It wasn't working in CBUS with Nash as the go to guy. He gets paid like a franchise player but he isn't one. He has exactly one season in which he's scored more than 70 points despite being handed all offensive opportunities. He's a tremendous player but he is NOT the guy to build around.

I think the Rangers look good for the next 2-3 years but I don't think Howson completely shit the bed here. I mean this return might be classified as bad but it's not Scott-Howson-bad, so he's at least got that going for him.. which is nice.

I guess Howson did okay, but he gave up his teams franchise player. Sorry, but if this is what he was holding out for, I'd be one disappointed Blue Jackets fan.

Obviously there are some differences but this reminds me of the Whalers trading Ron Francis in a lot of ways. Hopefully for Columbus it doesn't turn out to be the beginning of the end like it was with Hartford.

They really need to get MacKinnon or Seth Jones. I think it will be between the BJs and the Islanders for last place. They are both the weak links in otherwise tough divisions. After that it's in the hands of the lottery but at least they should both be guaranteed top 3. Unless of course there is no season and they go with a similar format as the Crosby draft lottery. The good news for the BJs if that happens is that they have 2 more 1st rounders that could end up anywhere in what is supposed to be a deep draft.

If Doan can't be coaxed away from Phoenix (apparently he is meeting with the Pens soon), then Ray's best option in my opinion, is to stand pat and let the first few months of the season play out.

Some times that is the best option.

This deal would seem much better if it was a deadline deal on an expiring contract, but that's not the case at all. He had all the time in the world to make this happen.

Wondering if the Flames would rent out Iggy at the deadline. This is like a five year pipe dream in the making.
