He still had a great career before he started cheating
Yes he did.

But roids was THE story in the game for 15 years, and he STILL had to find a good vein. He should be nullified just on stupidity alone.

He wasn’t playing the game as it was legally meant to be played.

I understand how ignorant people won’t understand the nuance of my argument here, but it really is all about the details.

Bonds = non cheater
ARod = cheater
I may be a Neanderthal but I do understand the difference in the argument whether a player cheated with steroids or not and how it should affect how players are evaluated for the Hall of Fame. But this isn’t about who should be in the Hall. It is who the greatest players are in the history of the game. Ty Cobb was a racist jerk, I’d argue that is worse than breaking the rules of baseball but I’d still consider him for this list. I may have missed the rules of who should be considered but I am coming from purely how much did players dominate their era and how they stack against each other.

Cobb wasn’t a racist jerk.

Al Stump was a fabricator.

That’s Ty Cobb throwing out the first pitch at the Detroit Stars new stadium in Hamtramck. He was recently retired and came back just for the ***** League event.

That was some rough reading with all of Milk's nonsense! I went Bonds, Williams, Mickey!

I compartmentalize that aspect. I have no problem considering Cobb or Puckett or Rocker. But I can’t include Sosa or ARod. Baseball is baseball, personality is not. Bonds played the game that was placed in front of him. ARod played in the shadows.

Oscar Charleston, Barry Bonds, Ty Cobb.
I have never heard of Charleston, and can tell you now I will never vote for him without some serious stumping, but he is a HOFer, so I will add him for you next poll.

Oscar Charleston's baseball reference page. Google him. Buck O'Neil said he was the best that ever played the game. He said Oscar could have hit 50 homers and stole 100 bases every season.

Like Trout and Pujols, I assume he was roiding in HS.

Doesn’t bother me, just my assumption.
Yeah I wouldn't be surprised if he did them for over a decade. But if we're saying Bonds didn't cheat because there were no official rules with suspensions and testing til that went into effect then you kind of have to give Rodriguez a pass until then. And he put up some great numbers in the seasons before that. I guess it depends on where you cut off his numbers or whether the later career suspensions disqualifies him from being in the all time great list. But again, yeah, he definitely used steroids and probably for a long, long time.

Trout, I don't know about. He's never failed a test that I know of and if he was using some stuff you would think it would help him recover better from these constant injuries.

You’re in for a real treat learning about this unicorn then.

Pretty much Willie Mays before Willie Mays. Except maybe more power and faster.

He’s in my Top Ten.

IMO, picking him or Josh gibson as a top 10 is just listening to stories... stories are meant to be exaggerated and they are told by admirers... not the most trust worthy people here...

i almost never take people at their word when it comes to things like this.... unless statistics and league back it up...

pre color barrier MLB might not have had anyone besides whites... but it was still a better league with better and more talented players than any other league...

of course the elite of any league would have been elite in every league... but stats are always going to look better in a weaker league by those elite...

And we don’t have all the stats from the N-Leagues. I have a very hard time giving them ANY veracity because you are dealing with such an incomplete dataset. and, to be fair, I am not even sure how those leagues were run. Were there schedules? Did they have playoffs? Championships? Were they just barnstorming? If so, were they playing against themselves, or did they play against local “all star” teams? I just don’t know how they were structured.

As for Charleston, I have heard of Gibson. I heard of Paige. I heard of Bell. They were all LOUD legends. The fact that I (a true lover of the game) have never had his name gain any traction for me tells me he isn’t in the same class as those guys. And I was already hesitant in voting Gibson because I ONLY have legend to go on (same with Oh, tbf).

Hammerdown, is that you?

I, too, suspect cheating is as common as apple pie

stat keeping back then was certainly not good... i mean it wasnt even great in the MLB, how do you expect it to be good in a league with zero money, and a very localized fanbase...

His stats do back up the stories. He dominated his leagues until he was 30.
