335.2 IP for Koufax in 1965
323IP for Koufax in 1966

He won the Cy Young both seasons and never pitched again. Brutal.
TJ didn’t exist yet.

anyone who ever got TJ should have all their numbers post-TJ ignored and have asterisks applied.

Yup. I made that argument at the time. Bartolo’s CY could have gone to Roger.

Again, getting too entrenched the the exact accolades can get dicey. Just look at him and see that he actually GOT 7. Regardless how many he missed out on or how many he didn’t deserve, 7 is a disgusting number.

agreed... and also proof about how he was perceived as a player... Often perception and stats dont show the same picture... For Clemens it did....

I am not sure I agree with this. He was a bad ass, and MAYBE he held on a bit too long, but he was never Timmeh-bad. He was never Price-bad. He was never Sale-bad.
Oh, I never said bad. I said good. Lots and lots of good with a couple of years where they were some of the best players ever(ish)

How many MVPs did Jordan deserve? How many MVPs did Jordan get?

Imo, Maddux is a bit like Cal Ripken in that he was a good player for so long that people forget he was a total badass in his prime. Or at least thats how I saw it growing up.

not even close IMO... Ripken, is almost an inner circle HOFer... but if you look at his stats, he was NEVER the best offensively... never had a season with the best BA, never best OBP, never best OPS+, never best anything...

His WAR was just crazy high because he played great defense and never missed a game...

Maddux at least was the BEST for a couple seasons...

I would argue that his defense was not because he was a GREAT player, but because he was a SMART player. He incorporated positioning before positioning was a thing.

possible... But my point about him was that if he wasnt THE iron man, he would probably be a low end HOFer... below Jeter....

although, i do remember when he played, and thinking that him never missing games actually hurt his stats... unlike Gehrig, a FIrst baseman, who was able to play at an elite level while never missing games... i dont think Ripken really could...

i dont remember if that was an actual thing people talked about when he played or not... but i do remember thinking that...

And for his era his offense was really good, too. 6th/7th in batting average on top of great defense on top of never missing a game on top of playing shortstop.

Maybe this is where the comparison breaks down because pitching is more specialized and Maddux has 2 of the 5 highest ERA+ seasons of all time. Not quite the same thing as winning MVP twice

6th or 7th every season is not elite though.... in talks of best players ever... you are comparing a top 10 pitcher of all time to probably not even a top 40(not sure if i am exaggerating or not) offensive position player...

I don't know if I'd separate those two things. I think it's all part of it. Some guys are athletic, some are smart and the really great ones are both.

How many truly elite players can we even get from that era? Rickey Henderson did seem like the easy one and maybe he went a tad bit early but who is the next best?

Bonds, Henderson. The 2 taken

Griffey and Boggs. Maybe Guerrero

I do think Griffey is easily ahead of Ripken. Boggs I haven't thought about. I guess there is a reason I put my 83 Topps card away.

Boggs vs Ripken would be interesting. I would vote Boggs because of his special obp. But he was also not a speedster so he wasted his special skill. Since his power was below average.

I guess he's more in the Schmidt era than the Henderson era but eventually I think we should get around to George Brett.

I think it would be interesting, too, because people are placing value of positions and defense. I have no illusions of someone like Ozzie Smith going top 50 or however long we do this but Ripken is interesting just where he ends up.

Honestly, Maddux is interesting, too. Randy Johnson has optics. Pedro certainly was pretty visible, too. Maddux was the headliner of a consistently good Barves team on TBS. Glavine and Smoltz. Consistently good pitching. Somewhere in that was two of the greatest seasons from a pitcher. Does that resonate the same way?
