If you include more than just batting Mays is easily better than Williams
Definitely, but I can’t exclude “The Greatest Hitter That Ever Lived”. He’s too much of a legend AND he missed multiple seasons in his prime to fight in the war, too. Legend.

Mays also missed important productive seasons to war (Korea)...would have made a run at Babe Ruth's home run total if he played in 1952 and 1953 (he had 127 at bats in 1952)

more than the yankees?? i doubt that.... but i also dont care enough to do the research... hard to even consider Randy Johnson a Yankee
He retired as a Giant.

he was more a Yankee than he was a Giant, though.

It's probably Bonds, but the steroids will really make it hard for people to accept that answer, imo. Steroids only do so much. Bonds was an incredibly skilled player. Ruth may be the most dominant relative to his era ever, but I don't think he can hold a handle to most modern players in terms of skill. So I lean Bonds.
The roids just made it so he had more strength in his 4th AB of game 136 than he would have had otherwise, and if he got injured, he would recover faster from it (meaning he could actually workout more as well, tbf). But the roids did not affect his hand-eye. And roids are detrimental to twitch-muscles as well (hence why you don’t really see roids in the NBA).

Thought about Babe Ruth as he's most folks default GOAT for baseball. But that's kind of like when Bill Russell was the default GOAT for basketball.

Went with the Say Hey Kid (even though he was Giant).

If he stays healthy, I think Ohtani will end up being the GOAT.

It's true that Williams and Mays missed time because of the wars but Ruth also missed out on a lot of at bats the first 5 or 6 years of his career when 3 out of every 4 days he was resting up from being a great pitcher.

I may not agree with your pick, but I don’t really “not like“ it.

As Milk said, though, I am not sure he really even belongs on a top 5 pitcher list (off the top of my head, Paige, W Johnson, R Johnson, Maddux, Clemens, among others)
Looking at those 6 pitchers, based on their career ERA+:
1. Paige 150 (22 seasons, including ***** Leagues)
2. W Johnson 147 (21 seasons)
3. Clemens 143 (24 seasons)
4. Young 138 (22 seasons)
5. R Johnson 135 (22 seasons)
6. Maddux 132 (23 seasons)

Based on this stat, Paige would be the greatest among this group. Young is in the discussion. I'm willing to consider that my outside the box pick was too outside the box.

It does bring up a good point, are players from the ***** Leagues equal to MLB players from the same era, better, slightly worse? How do those who never saw the big leagues fit into this discussion (and I know I'm late to the table with this question. I don't usually stray out of the GIants' forum)?

Two dudes that didn't get a fair shake at the end. Both were still near the top with little signs of slowing.

No doubt about that. And legends always live on.

Gehrig and Clemente are my two favorite of all time.
Clemente was an oversight on this list. Thanks for bringing him up.

but this is not a poll for “favorite” player. This is a poll for “best” player.

His down time was baseball related. That is the cost of doing business.

Mays and Williams’ time away had nothing to do with the game itself.

Totally different situations.

I think that Paige and Gibson are probably the only players who are probably SERIOUSLY in this discussion from the N-leagues. But objectively, there is no way to really judge. Same with Oh. No one here ever saw Gibson, Paige or Oh play (or Ruth, for that matter), so we can only go off the stories we were told around the campfire after the day’s hunt.

Joe D played OF. Fisk played C.

if I were starting a team now, I would take Fisk over Joe D without batting an eye.
Joe D is just better, though.
