I am not convinced Johnson is the GOAT pitcher, let alone that high among all players. I think he was OK at #9

although i agree... i dont know if i like 8 position players before the first pitcher... i would rank whichever pitcher i have first, earlier... maybe at 5... just for list balance...

Difference of opinion. I think hitters are more important that pitchers when it comes to all-time ranking.

Not going to argue the point because I think that is pure opinion, and your take is just as valid as mine.

would he?? joe D missed his three seasons at 28, 29,30... sure those are prime age... but he also started his career at 21... so it might not be as prime as you think...

and trout did all of his damage through age 27... so if he missed 28,29,30, he would basically have the same WAR7, just a better perception, because he missed those three seasons, not got injured during them...
I think Joe Ds range was pretty darn consistent in there. He was MVP at 32 and runner up at 33.

I do think Trout would've benefitted tremendously from missing 3 'prime' years funny enough. I'd probably be on here stumping for him really high.

Its just that if we're talking primes, Pedro Martinez is easily the best ERA+ guy. Trout is in the ballpark with greats but Pedro is the guy. Its kinda just him.

Joe D’s third mvp was a bad mvp. He was not the best player not by any measurement. And not even close.

In his war7, only one season was after he came back. Same when you take his best 7 ops+ seasons.

Point is sure he missed 3 seasons at a prime age. But I am not convinced that meant prime baseball seasons. Most players decline after a certain amount of seasons. And again he came into the league at 21 which is very young.

No, we will never know what he would have done with those 3 seasons. But I think some are giving him too much credit for those 3 seasons missed.

I just don’t see how anyone can pick Joe d over trout based on regular season.

If you want to weigh his legend because he won 9 ws. That’s a whole other story. And I can’t really disagree. He had a couple very good ws appearances.

My wife knows who Joe D is and she has no idea who Trout is. There is definitely a legend there.

Oh. Absolutely. Joe d has legend status.

If we were doing a legend status ranking, he would easily be top 10.

1.Ruth
2. Willie mays
3. Ted Williams
4. Lou gehrig
5. Ty Cobb
6. Mickey
7. Musial
8. Joe d
9. Griffey jr
10. Nolan Ryan

I'm very 70's 80's biased but I couldn't have a legend list without Pete and Reggie.

I got 2 pitchers that won't make a runoff and Greg Maddux. It looks like I'll be on Maddux for the runoff unless someone can swing me to Pedro or Albert.

You can’t discuss Jeter or Posey (or others, granted) without talking about them being leaders and having multiple rings.

if we are still doing this long enough to include either of those two, their “winning” absolutely is part of their DNA.

How do you value it? That is where the problem comes in.

I'm trying to give Cy Young another look but some of the stats are just weird, especially from the very early years. Like in 1893 he led the league in SO/BB ratio with a .99 mark. Read that again and digest it.

Just curious. Is this greatest player series going to go all the way to the 847th greatest player of all time? If so, I'm voting for Denis Menke. Just sayin. In the meantime, may I respectfully request to be taken off of the distribution list?

I don’t see anything about the rationale for those rankings, no. But he doesn’t even have Clemens on his list, so it’s hard to take it seriously.
I'd love to know how he came to these names and their order. Dean and Feller over Spahn is an interesting decision. So is half of the lefties over Johnson.
