Maybe he knows his grades won't be up to snuff and taking a proactive approach.

And I have no idea about Vaughn specifically, but I know a lot of these kids come from pretty modest backgrounds and have family situations that sometimes warrant leaving early just to get a paycheck (even if it isn't huge money) Hard to blame them without knowing all of the details.

If he was eligible the whole first year, then in all likelihood, he has what it takes academically, at least for a UNLV basketball player that is.

What I think it is, a lot of these kids have so much confidence, they don't care about the draft precogs. They think they are first round material and will prove it during the workouts.

Well, I'll point to Terry Rozier from UofL.

via Card Chronicle:

"Terry looks at home and sees his mom working two jobs, and she's going 16, 17 hours a day," Pitino said. "And he says, 'OK, maybe I wouldn't be drafted as high as I would be if I waited one more year, but I'd rather sacrifice that for my mom not having to work two jobs.'"

The thing is second rounders are starting to get multiple year deals now even if it means spending time in the D-League. They make about 1 mil total more or less after that second year and making that much money by ~20 years old with zero student debt still gets you off to a good start in life.

Plus they can always play overseas or in the D-League for another 10+ years and end up doing just fine. Not saying it's smart to leave as a 2nd rounder, but it's not as disastrous as some make it out to be.

The Vaughn move is mind boggling but always kinda knew he was a bit of a goof.

Really thought Rozier would be back again too. Guy needs to work on his shot

Not a chance unfortunately. Same with Stanley Johnson. I wish there were more talented top 10 picks returning… it would be great for college basketball. But they would be stupid to leave that money on the table.

My idea has always been let players declare and if they don't go in the first round then they can withdraw their name. Hold the first two rounds on separate days (second round the following day) and give players 24 hours to make up their minds if they want to risk going in the 2nd round. This mainly applies to freshman, but I think it would help give them a better idea of where they're at and a chance to make the right choice.

would love to see him come back too, but I keep hearing he could go 1 or 2. Just no way he stays if he's a lottery pick.

NBA should require two years in college.

I been said this. I think players should be allowed to declare straight from HS but if you decided to go to College, it should be mandatory that you stay 2 or 3 years

Smith Rivera going pro.

Another bone headed move and huge hit for Gtown.
