I guess that I missed the Boyle part of it....

I mean I thought that refs were there to enforce rules. They should have penalized Boyle, no?

it was a carbon copy of Marchand speedbagging DSedin last year in game 6

you get refs not enforcing rules ... you end up with players getting justice on their own

this summarizes the 2011-2012 NHL playoffs

The refs had, for a reason unknown, called coincidental minors on Boyle and Karlsson.

The situation was missed breakaway by the Rangers with other players involved in a scrum after the subsequent whistle.

Karlsson was standing to the side of this scrum, out of the way. Boyle (6'7, 244 lbs) came in late, grabbed Karlsson (5'11, 180 lbs) and threw several short, glove-on punches to his head before Karlsson was able to pull himself free and others intervened.

The Sens obviously felt the refs were not protecting their star players and went after Boyle as a result.

I think Dacks had the right answer here.

Start sending people off any time there's a scrum. I mean every time. Even the littlest scrums. Get that culture out of the game, you take this kind of stuff out of the game.

Want to get rid of dirty hits? Kick a guy out for every suspect hit. Even just suspect. If, upon review, the league deems it's dirty, suspend him 5 games and fine him $15,000 for the first offense.

Second offense is 25 games and a $75,000 fine.

Third offense is 82 games and a $500,000 fine.

You think guys won't stop doing this when they get suspended a year without pay and fined an extra half of their annual salary? I say they will.

You think coaches won't tell their players to keep it clean and/or reel it in if they have to play with short benches for half the season? I say they will.

You've got to change the culture, and the only way to do that is by installing the necessary rules and then (and here's the kicker) enforcing the rules.

The Carkner play reminds me of this play from the 1996 playoffs. A star is having liberties taken by a rat type player. He is then pounded into the ice.

If only Karlsson was 6'4 and 230 like Lemieux he could have just done this on his own.

Scrums are where that other stuff escalates, though.

Make guys start skating away after the whistle, and force them to between the whistles, and cheap plays will go away.

Um, did you link the wrong video?

Mario hits Krygier in the side of the head with his stick to start the whole thing. Todd Krygier was far from a "rat-type player", as well.

ya i dont disagree.. i guess i just dont want it to go that far

i think they should just put out that if you do something with a clear intent to injure, you will be out as long as the person you injured is out.. sure it takes the severity of the injury in to account, but i think that would put a little respect in to the game, even its forcing them to respect eachother

then you free yourself from the injury issue and if someone fails at injuring someone, you can more fairly suspend them

its certainly risky considering not everything is black and white, but i think it'd be worth it to put that out and see what happens.. you might end up with a couple huge suspensions that are controversial, but i bet people will stop hitting people from behind on the boards and the glancing elbows to the head for no apparent reason

and it'll definitely sink in with star players who wont want to risk the team's well-being on a hit.. elminating the star-power connundrum they have right now too

What were the penalties on that Mario-Kriyger thing anyway....

I was watching that game live and I think Mario got an instigator (not sure about this), 5 for fighting and a game misconduct.

There was no suspension despite the occurrence of "battery".

Maybe this clip is more relevant. Semenko protecting Gretzky. Until the NHL does something serious about rats going after pure skilled players with the extra-curricular stuff I have no problem with the players enforcing some justice.

Makes you wonder how Gretz had so much room out there and was injury free for his first 10 or so years, doesn't it?

of course, Lemieux wasn't above going after a 5'8 player himself.
John Garrett comes to the rescue at the end

Zenon Konopka fined $2500, and Sens fined $10K for pre-game chirping
(ZK was beaking off while a Rangers player was having a TV interview.)

So talking to an opposing player in warm-up (Konopka) = Bashing a player's face off the glass with both hands (Weber). :L :L :L

Star players get star treatment. There is no other explanation.

Welcome to the 2012 NBA... errrrr I mean NHL playoffs.

Pierre McQuire was on radio today speaking freely (only time he is actually really good) he blames the entire weekend shitshow of insane plays and injuries a direct result of Weber not getting suspended. i agree

When it was announced Weber was only going to be fined, you could almost see the collective eyebrows go up around the league and the slow smiles start to form on the faces of goons everywhere.

lmfao!!! Hagelin gets 3 and Carkner gets 1? What a fucking joke. This league's discipline is piss fucking poor. Not even my teams and it pisses me the fuck off. Weber gets nothing though?

Pens better get some fucking suspensions now.

Why is that a joke? I think a flying elbow to the head, against the glass, is way more dangerous than a one way beat down. Boyle fucking asked for it, Alfredsson was just trying to skate with the puck.
