I dunno about three games for Shaw, but I'm watching the replay (not shanahan's, just a youtube vid, and it looks to me like he tries to hit him (though not in the head). He doesn't charge from halfway down the ice, but he tightens up a bit a little before contact. I think he either figured, aw, fuck, I'm gonna hit him, better brace for this, or he figured, hey, a chance to nail the goalie and then took it. I'm not familiar enough with skating to know if he can successfully get out of the way, but I don't know that he really did try to avoid it.

You folks are brighter than me. Here's the video. It looks like he could just scrape the boards behind Smith if he wanted to avoid or lessen contact. Am I incorrect?

As most of us already said in the Shaw thread as it all happened live... No SD should have been given. The in-game penalties assessed were more than enough.

I'd say not injured is more appropriate than not hurt.

I've taken a similar hit while wearing that style of helmet and, while they are great for protecting you from a puck, they're not designed for being hit with a shoulder.

It hurts like hell! It may not have caused any major injury, but when it happened to me, I felt like I had just been run over by a truck for the first few minutes.

Backstrom does not deserve a game, but if he gets one, whatever. He deserves a fine. The bottom line is it was stupid of him to even put himself and his team in this position. If you want to retaliate for the late slash, fine, but keep your goddammed stick down.
