Based on the fact he was barely above the limit, he probably was hanging out with friends and had a few beers but didn't want to get drunk and decided to call it a night.

1. Why the fuck are his friends living far enough off-campus that he has to drive?

2. He is under 21. One drink is enough to earn him a criminal offense. The whole "didn't want to get drunk" thing isn't an excuse. You are the starting QB of the #1 team in the country. Don't plan on committing a serious misdemeanor.

3. He tried to avoid a checkpoint. That says that he knew he was intoxicated enough that officers would discover it as he was going through. So clearly, he knew he had some signs of intoxication.

4. It would take at least four beers to get Barrett over .08, and most likely 5. Let's not kid ourselves. He may not have wanted to get shit-faced, but he wanted to get buzzed. And when you want to get buzzed, you should never, ever drive.

Like turning the radio dial? Don't be absurd.
Like searching for a radio station. Hell, texting while driving has been revealed to be 6 times more likely to result in a fatal crash than driving intoxicated at and BAC according to recent studies. Being just barely over .08 is not a big deal.

It's rare that I agree with Desmond Howard because most of the time he is a raving moron, but "If you have had even one drink, don't put the keys in the ignition," is wise counsel.

People who drink and drive are among the most ignorant people on the planet, no matter how educated or intelligent they might otherwise be.

1. Kids at OSU aren't confined to living on campus, and not only that, our campus is enormous. Walking from one end of campus to the other can easily be a 60-90 minute walk.

2. Don't disagree here, he should know better.

3. This one I'm interested in seeing. I doubt he "knew" what his BAC was, he just didn't want to have to get caught up in the checkpoint and risk it. Again, don't disagree.

4. This one, you can't possibly know. You don't know what he was drinking or how long he was drinking, so this is 100% speculation.

He was legally drunk and behind the wheel. He endangered the public. You seem to be the only one defending such action. So fuck off yourself.

He should have ran away from the cops and hid out at someone's place for an hour. Go FSU style.

No, texting while driving causes six times as many accidents. Not fatal accidents. DWIs cause about 11,000 deaths per year in the US, and it used to be much, much higher (25,000 or so). Most estimates say texting while driving kills 3,500-5,000 people per year.

For fatal accidents, it isn't even close. Considering how often people text while driving, DWIs are probably more fatal by a rate of at least 30.

Cool. Then your local police officers are inept and you are lazy. It takes, what, three minutes? Not a particularly high price to pay in order to deter drunk drivers.

Does it really matter? DUI checkpoints are nothing but a show. I'm trying to get home, I'll go around it.

Go fuck yourself with your drama bino. Being barely over the limit is statistically safer than changing the radio station when you're driving.
As a 20 year old who shouldn't be drinking? -- I have a hard time believing that blowing a .1 would be equal to changing the channel on the radio. There's a reason .1 is illegal.

My guess is this eventually goes to 2 games.

from the OSU Student Athlete Handbook (page 28)

http://grfx.cstv.com/schools/osu/graphics/pdf/handbook/Student-Athlete-Handbook.pdf

The student athlete who has an alcohol/substance abuse occurrence (DUI, underage possession, etc.) will be subject to more stringent alcohol testing as part of their management plan. Any positive test for alcohol in these student athletes who are under 21 will be deemed a second positive in the program.

B. Second Positive

1. The management team will be informed of the second positive drug test and/or substance abuse occurrence.

2. The student-athlete will be re-evaluated by the intervention coordinator and a substance abuse counselor approved by the Department of Athletics to determine subsequent treatment options.

3. The student-athlete will meet with the management team to discuss any recommended changes to the previous plan that was in place.

4. The student-athlete will be subject to a two-week suspension from all competition at the earliest available time. If the student athlete competes in multiple sports, the suspension will be served in the sport that the positive tests occurred. If the positive tests occurred in more than one sport, the suspension will be served at the earliest available time.

5. Re-instatement to the team will be considered by the Athletic Director or his/her designee in consultation with the management team.

6. The student-athlete will be subject to reasonable cause testing.

But then, Gene Smith, AD, weighs in with this:

Here's more clarity from 11W: "Athletic Director Gene Smith tells Eleven Warriors because it is a misdemeanor, Barrett is not subject to the mandatory two-week suspension. Smith said the ongoing suspension is up to the discretion of head coach Urban Meyer."

According to the OSU handbook this is considered a second offense since is his underage. By their rules he should be suspended for 2 weeks. We shall see.

Welp never mind. Not gonna follow the school rules I see.
