If there is no cap room for him then we are really just dealing with hypotheticals. If that's the case I would love to have any of the other 12 LW's ranked ahead of him and probably 2 or 3 ranked behind him

NHL Player Rankings - LW
Cap is an issue at the moment, however in the off-season Streit will most likely be moved and Umberger is a prime buyout candidate. That clears 7 million. As for the list:

Benn-Dallas never move their captain and if they do it would the pieces leaving Philly would negate benefit
Sharp-more expensive and aged
Pacioretty-Montreal captain and more expensive, again pieces needed to acquire would be large
Hall-more expensive and hasn't produced more to justify additional money
Marleau-more expensive and aged
Nyquist-similar player, doesn't provide size of JVR that team lacks
Kunitz-aged and product of playing with Crosby
Parise-way too expensive
Landeskog-very nice player; would cost a bunch to get him out of Colorado
Kane-has 1 season over 20 goals, don't believe he is worth contract size
Skinner-very nice player but I believe Carolina is building around him and Staal

Part of the reason I like the idea of JVR is because Toronto is obviously in reset mode and d/t injury his value wold be fairly low. That's all.

Pittsburgh loses their game in hand on us to the Caps. It remains a three point gap, but we both have 20 games remaining, 3 of them against each other. This should be some kind of battle moving forward. Those three games will be almost like a mini playoff series.

Jake needs to heal quickly. Next game v. Pens is March 19.

Supposedly he was going to be out only 2 weeks and that time frame fits him in getting back before the 19th. Hopefully that is the case.

I was looking at next years cap and see that Gudas is an RFA next year and not an UFA. I would think he will be back.

Up through about the end of January i would agree with you wholeheartedly. He's been very mediocre or even bad on most nights since then.

I don't mind Gudas right now. The dude can obviously crush people, but he also can skate and move the puck at times. He has three assists in his last five games. Besides, I am more than certain that he gets under the skin of the opposition and that's a good thing as long as he doesn't cross that thin line. In my opinion, he gets targeted by the refs however and that makes his job even more difficult.

I am in total agreement with this. He has played extremely well for us at times. When he's not out there head hunting he is a half decent player. On the penalty kill he has gotten the puck either out of the zone on down the ice more than any defenseman. He also blocks shots and gets off shots in the offensive zone. Oh yeah and he can also hit a little.

Basically, there's a reason that teams wanted to take him off our hands at the deadline, but Hextall was smart enough not to do it. It seems like we will be re-signing him unless someone really overpays.

Looks to me like the Rivalry game tonight could be of serious interest to us as well. Hard to believe that Kane is leading the Hawks with 85 points and Zetterberg is leading the Wings with only 41. That's less than half!!

Regardless, if Chicago wins in regulation, we could be just 6 back of Detroit with 2 games in hand (that we should win). Their next game on Sunday is also against the Hawks.

Basically, I'm saying we don't even have to pass the Pens to get into the playoffs, but it would certainly be nice.

To me, the Metro is just stronger than the Atlantic top to bottom. Potentially 5 of our teams get in compared to the automatic 3 of theirs.
