Just as I thought - “I’m going back to what I was as a player. I am infielder first. That’s when I was at my best. My window is closing. I’m trying to open it back up a little bit.” -- Rangers infielder Isiah Kiner-Falefa, who is no longer trying to become a catcher

The problem is there's no one I think is worth the price it would cost to get them, I don't mind paying a guy, I just don't want to give up prospects for the privilege of then paying them lots of money
I agree

That is a good point, but you weren't making it as a part of this conversation until now. Lol

You seemed to have lapsed into a previous conversation.

To your point though, I agree. That is why we should have picked up Rendon a couple of months ago.
I agree but JD and the owners were never seriously in on Rendon. It was all fluff to keep the fans thinking they were serious about improving the team

It is hard to know if they were just too cheap or if he is just not good at negotiating. Either way it was a huge blunder.

I'd say intentionally cheap. Offering 6 years when every other team was going 7 was a deal killer

Did not the Angels only make an offer of 7 guaranteed in the offseason? It was reported by national media that the Rangers had the second best offer and taking into account the cost of living state income tax the best offer with their option at 7 years.
Not 100 % sure but what I remember off top of my head

I believe the AAV offered by both was identical the difference was the number of years. I also believe Rendon made it clear that the number of years was the big factor in his decision

I think he is worth the playing time. We are not winning anything this year so it is a good time to look at him as well as some young pitchers.

From what I have always heard, the union has hoodwinked the players into ignoring cost of living in different areas and state income tax. They have convinced them that the union itself, is more important than individual finances.

The state income tax differential isn't quite as big of a deal as it would seem, because most states charge taxes on visiting players income while they are playing in those states.

I guess I should say.

Why didn’t they get it done

Instead of why didn’t they “try”

Rendons contract isn’t even that bad
It takes him to 36 years old
Not 40 years old

If they truly wanted to get Rendon their offer should have matched or exceeded the Angels offer.. not be 1 year and 40 million short. That’s not trying.. that’s just trying to appease the fan base
“Hey we tried.. but at the end of the day he wanted to be an Angel”
Well yeah I bet he did want the bigger contract..
If they truly wanted Castellanos they could have had him
If they truly wanted Starling Marte they could have had him
If they truly wanted Josh Donaldson they could have got him as well

Once they failed to get Rendon, I think they realized they had no shot to build a playoff team this year. JD said they had some win now moves on the backburner that no longer made sense after losing out on Rendon.

This team is projected to win 79.5 games. Signing Castellanos or trading for Marte doesn't really move the needle much. I personally think it would be stupid to spend $70 million on Nick Cast and still finish in fourth place.

We can/should be critical of what happened with Rendon if their entire plan was based around signing him. If you are to believe the Rangers reporters, they offered him 6 years at $32 million with a vesting 7th year. Boras never called the Rangers back to make a counter offer if you believe the reporting. Rendon signed for 7/$35. Was the Rangers initial offer such a lowball that Boras/Rendon were offended? I think it's fair to be critical of the Rendon negotiations.

But in general, spending a ton of money on a team that's projected to suck and try to spend your way to the playoffs does not work out well. Look how it worked out for the Phillies, Padres, and Mets last year. The Angels have been trying to do it for years.

I blame JD more for the position this team is in (only one good young talented player) than the lack of upgrades this winter. Their drafting and player development has been piss poor. They did admit to it and changed their entire drafting and player development strategy a year ago. They quit drafting athletes and moved towards more skilled guys.

I'm not convinced JD can still build a title worthy team. There are no more stupid front offices. The rest of the league has caught up and possibly passed him. But I feel like people are mad about the wrong thing.
