Says "I'm resigning, not retiring...I might go coach a High School team, or something."

Way to run out on your team when they need you the most, asshole!

Naaahhhh, I get it...he just doesn't have it anymore. This is way better than limping through a lost season, losing potential recruits who don't want to commit to a program in an uncertain situation, etc.

Kirby Smart has been mentioned as someone that the University will pursue. Whoever it is, they will have their work cut out for them, and huge shoes to fill.

I'll be in my stall crying for the next week.

I took it differently.

I think he realizes that he is not what they are needing. He realizes that he is just going to sink them. Like he said, when it happens to a guy his age, the program needs to let him go. Personally, I think he should have finished the season/bowl game though.

I think he is leaving with respect from everybody and his head held high.

I took it as just another way he was hinting at being forced out. But, maybe I'm crazy

he quit on them, he knew he was retiring but didn't want to get blasted by his rivals on his way out.

Its called quitting.

its a bad look for anyone, but Spurrier will turn on the charm and every story will be positive.

Well...except for the players he recruited and Quit on.

Maybe you are right, but not really sure South Carolina is in a position to force anyone out.

BOOM...anybody who actually wanted to force this guy out is a complete eejut of the highest order.

Now, it's possible that there were some boosters or administrators who might have started to question him, but unless he's completely screwing things up in terms of violations, then you let him leave on his terms, when he's done.

And anybody who IS questioning him because the program took a step back last year, don't let those four great seasons from 2010-2013 cloud your judgment...this is a perennial .500 team, not a blueblood who has temporarily lost it's way

He's the perfect age for the next Nebraska head coach, so I see why he called it resigning and not retirement.

I mean if you are SC, and you force out Spurrier, who you bringing on? Another has been college hall of fame coach out of their prime to suck the 5 seasons he has left?

My opinion...
Fans Divided On Retirement of Spurrier

"Remember those years when Clemson fans actually shut up and stopped thumping their chests on rivalry weekend? It was nothing short of a blessing from God, which makes Spurrier… well, the God of USC football, deserving of praise and worship rather than blasphemy. This may sink in as the fan base waits, and waits, and waits for the resurrection."

None of those guys quit 1/2 way through the season, right?
Well Petrino did in the NFL, but you are right as far as the other 2.

I have no love loss for Spurrier as a human being, but one thing I think we need to give him credit for is saying what he believes. His cuts through the PC bullshit that owns our society now that everyone expects. I wish we had more people in society like him...nothing worse than someone smiling and saying all the politically correct things .. only to find out they are scum behind the scenes. Spurrier just lays it out there...
