I can recall when Barry Sanders just barely broke the 2,000 yard rushing mark against the Jets. The commentators were hoping Sanders didn't get tackled for a loss. But Sanders rushed for another 53 yards on another play finishing the season with 2,053 yards.

So no it wouldn't count as 100 yards in a game.

The most coldblooded situation I recall relating to what the OP is asking. Happened way back in 19 and 72 when the regular season was a total of 14 games and a RB gaining 1000 yards was a pretty significant milepost. Atlanta's Dave Hampton hit the 1000 yard mark right on the nose for the first time in his career. They halted the game for a quick minute, gave him the football he was carrying when he hit 1000 yard mark and he got a nice ovation from the crowd. Can't remember if it was the next play, but Hampton's number was called 1 more time and on that carry he lost 3 yards and finished the season with 997 yards rushing. Hampton would crack the 1000 mark with the Falcons a couple seasons later. The 1 n only time he did so in his career.

The officials stopped the game too when Sanders hit the milestone and gave him the game ball. Pretty sure it was Herman Moore who took the football from Sanders playing around.

Heres the question.

if a RB gets over 100 yds in a game. he technically did it. (When asked how many times you broke a 100 yds in a game)
but finishes the game with 97 yds, does his breaking a 100 yards count?

Nope.

The RB in question had the chance of staying in the game in an attempt to push his run yards higher.
But, by getting stopped for a loss of yards, he then loses the record.

If he wanted the record, he could have asked to come out of the game.

Stats arent official until the following Thursday.

True story.

Would have to assume no record would be considered broken, "officially", until the stats are official.
For the win!

After OJ's 1975 season. Barry's 1997 season was the most impressive season I've seen from a RB. Barry also set the record for most 100 yard games in a season that year going for 14 in a row from week 3 to week 17

Ted Williams was hitting .3996 going into the last day of the season, which was a double header.
Had he sat, he would have finished with a .400 batting average.

He played.
He went 6-8.
Finished with a .406 mark that remains the last time someone batter oved .400 in MLB.

I remember OJ's 2k season...the Bills had OJ and OJ on OFC....lol

Sanders is still imo the most dynamic RB I've ever seen play.

Yeah his 2k season was something to see in 73. I just think his 75 season was better, but OJ's prime was short, 4, 5 years tops. For a season I might pick Juice over any RB, but for a career RB. It'd have to be Sweetness or Barry and I agree. Barry was dynamic as shit. Had he not missed 5 games during the 1993 season when he gained 1115 yards. I think he rushes for 1300+ yards 10 seasons in a row. That's pretty amazing imo. As it stands now. He averaged 99.8 rushing yards per game at 5 yards a pop for his career.

Something similar happened to Nick Chubb last year

He reached a 1000 yards in the last game and then lost three yards on his last carry

So the answer is no

yes. if the question is formed as a final result. Just like a 1000 yd rusher that ends the season with 997 yds.
if asked how many times he ended the season with as a 1000 yd rusher you wouldnt count that season. However if asked how many years did he gain a 1000 yds, would you then count that season.

In this case is 100yds & games.

I just find it interesting & curious what others think in these scenarios.

Just like if someone breaks a record (any record), but finishes below the record. technically the record was broken, but who is considered the record holder in the end?

The answer is no because you have to count the whole game. The RB didn't rush for 100 yards in that game because he ended with only 97 yards. He got past 100 yards at one point, but he did not rush for 100 yards in the game.
