Can't blame Crosby for signing the deal. I think Mario is nuts for offering it though. I actually laughed when they said Crosby gave the Pens a hometown discount on NHL network. He's had two concussions & missed a ton of games due to injury & Crosby is the one helping out the Pens in this deal. UNBELIEVABLE!!

So you think 8.7 per was the highest Crosby could have gotten on the open market?

I wouldn't give ANY player a 12 year contract, especially a player who's had multiple concussions. I don't care who they are. 8.7 million per year, Cry me a river.

Doesn't matter what you would give, you're not a GM of an NHL team. I asked if you thought 8.7 per year was the most Crosby could get on the open market.

The point is that regardless of what you might think is fair value, there is a good chance Crosby could have gotten more money from at least one of the other NHL teams out there. Look at the contracts these guys have handed out in the past, there's no doubt a GM out there would have thrown big money to bring a player like Crosby on board, regardless of concussion risks.

In other words, he did take a discount to stay in Pittsburgh.

It depends on how long Crosby plays. Dipietro has 9 years left on his deal for a lot less money than Crosby is getting. It's obviously a risk they had to take. I understand why they gave him the contract. I don't have to agree with it.

I half agree and half don't.

Yes, absolutely Crosby could have gotten more than $8.7 million per year on the open market. I mean, shit, if I were the Islanders' GM, I would pay him well over $10 million per simply b/c I'd sell 5,000 season tickets the month after.

But I don't think he took a discount b/c it was the hometown. I think he took a little less b/c of the TERM of the contract. I don't think many teams would have offered that long of a deal with Crosby's injury history. And since NHL is guaranteed money, it made sense for him to sign. And it was a good move for the Pens to lock him up - both b/c he's a good investment in the true sense of the word and because frankly, you should reward the people that bring you success and profit. They did that. Kudos to them.

I sincerely think he did it to benefit the team as well as having some security. I'm sure both sides are thrilled with this vote of confidence in the other side. But don't discount how competitive this guy is. Why do you think they let this information out a mere 3 days before July 1st? "Hey Zach! See this guy here? He'll be here for the next 13 years! Oh, and he left some money on the table to help the team be competitive and win a few more of those Cups. Yeah, that trophy you just missed out on." Of course, this is what I want to believe, so don't you dare try to change my mind! :)

Grammar, saving lives.

"...don't you, dare, try to change my mind!"

"Let's eat grandma!"

"Let's eat, grandma!"

...don't eat grandma, use a comma. :)

A tangent... why do Pens' fans have such a hard on for Parise all of a sudden? Scoring goals is not their problem. It's defense and in the net that are the issues. I would think landing/trading for a top defender would be the best way they could improve this off-season.

1-I...don't think that's possible in my case, but I do agree that is the overall feeling of the masses.
2-I know. The better option is Suter: but he's going to be crazy expensive. Did you see the Wideman deal?
3-I don't think they want to commit the years to a big name that they'd have to. Not with the names coming up the line. I do think they'd get a secondary name though. Not sure who. I dunno. I've learned to...
4-Trust Shero.

Someone I follow on twitter is RTing some crazies who said stupid things after the signing. I weep for the nation.
@PatrickRKennedy
Crosby gets a 100 mill 10yr contract and Quick gets a 50 mil 10yr contract. That pathetic. Crosby is a greedy fuck
*stares at*
Then there's the slew of "Sydney" and "Cindy" and "expletive". I have a love/hate relationship with twitter.

As people keep saying, with the LTIR opt out, it is kind of low risk.

its not all that low risk though.. sure ltir helps if his career is over, but what happens if the guy gets injured in december and has to miss significant time.. do you shut him down for the season come trade deadline time so you can add another piece? or do you hope he can come back? that could potentially happen every year.. and if you decide to bring someone in at the trade deadline and call crosby's year over, then he's healthy in the playoffs and you cant use him, you look like a jackass

and what if he gets a couple more conkys and becomes a shell of his former self, but still wants to play.. then what are you gunna do? you're gunna pay a 50-60 point guy 8.7 mil/year cause you dont have any other choice.. it wont take long for people to want him to retire if that happens

crosby is and always was going to be a lifetime penguin, what's the point of signing a contract like this? MAYBE you got him at a slight discount, but as everyone has pointed out, hes so loyal to the pens he took a hometown discount!.. he probably would've done that regardless of the years.. it might not have been as much, but like i said, i'd rather pay him 10/year for 5 years then 8.7 for 12

it might turn out to be a good deal, but the fact that we're discussing it shows that it isn't a guarantee.. IMO it's just an unnecessary risk that garners headlines

they can just shut him down and bring him back for the playoffs when the cap goes out the door...in theory...

i sincerely hope the CBA didn't leave that big of a loophole.. i know you can go over the cap in the playoffs, but there's gotta be a clause in there that says you cant have somone on LTIR to bring someone in to the fold at the trade deadline, and then keep both in the playoffs.. if that's the case why dont teams just have someone pull a muscle in march and rest up til the playoffs start, then you could have all the space you wanted.. but i suppose you never know with bettman

but still, you see my point.. if the pens needed cros to win a couple games for them in april he wouldn't be able to because they'd be over the cap.. hows that? :).. really just in general, it's not the career ending concussion part that's risky (in terms of on-ice team), it's the month here, 3 months there, 2 weeks in february, plus human nature to avoid what continuously causes you pain (shying away from contact, which would decrease his abilities), that makes it risky, IMO

The same cap hit he had for the next 12 years I don't think the Pens are complaining about that one.

As for Parise yeah it would be nice to sign him but I have a feeling he won't be a Penguin.
As for Suter I would rather have him and I think Shero will be all in on Suter but what will happen when Malkin and Letang get their pay days? They will still be tied for one year of Paul Martin at that time.
