because they investigated other long term deals so I expect them to treat this the same way. but they won't as its Crosby and Mario word has it its front loaded. similar to Luongos in a way

Yeah, but those other deals they investigated were for guys in their 30s and extended to years NOBODY expected them to still be playing, especially for that type of dough.

Seems like a good deal for the Pens here - I thought he'd get north of $10 million per.

12 year, $104.4m

If so, that's awesome. Oh Sid, I love you and your superstitious ways.

And I don't get why people think this is so risky. If he gets hit and is done for his career, he goes on forever IR and we have the cap space. This is only risky for the billionaires who have to pay out his salary even if he does get injured. I'm sure Ron Burkle appreciates your concern, but I think he'll be fine.

I guess if he somehow manages to miss a bunch more 3/4 seasons, it would hurt us. I don't know; I'm not worried at all, really.

just cause he'll still be fine doesn't mean its not risky.. i'm sure the guy didn't make billions because he took unnecessary risks all his life

Sure. But it's risky for him, not for the team itself in terms of who they can ice.

They have the cap room to put together a competitive team even without him, so I don't see this as a big risk.

Sid is probably a big enough draw in terms of merchandise revenue to at least get close to breaking even with the cost of his contract, and that likely won't change too much if he gets hurt down the road and can't play out the contract.

It's a measured risk.

I just like having the roster and contract flexibility allotted by shorter deals. Money-wise, this is a good deal for the Penguins.

if he's healthy i agree, he probably makes more than 8.7 mil a year for the pens.. if he's injured though, i disagree.. thats why i say its risky

i'm with you on the second half.. i'm not a fan of long contracts at all.. if i were the pens, id rather give him 50 mil for 5 years, then 104 for 12.. even if the concussions dont end his career, what happens if they take away that 'fighter' mentality of his and he stops going in to the dirty areas and the corners where he's so dangerous? at 8.7 mil, to live up to your contract on the ice, you have to put in at least 80-90 pts/season.. that leaves very little room for any decline in crosby's game, which may happen with a few more concussions..

career ending or no injuries and the pens are fine.. if it ends up being something in between that causes a decline in his game, the pens are effed

all I'm saying he's missed a shitload of games the last 2 seasons,I hope it's over and he stays healthy,,,,100mil is a lot to shell out if he ends up missing as many games as he plays

hell last season he was not much of a factor and they still made the playoffs

Exactly my point, but won't win the Cup without him. This is why I see the risk/reward worth it.

He'll sell merchandise as a "Pittsburgh legend" so to speak, even if he is hurt. If he stays healthy for some years, and then is forced to retire, he'll sell "nostalgia" merchandise. If he sticks with the franchise in another capacity after retiring (which I full expect him to do), his merchandise sales will spike again.

I think they break even money-wise if Crosby plays 40% of games for the next six years and then retires, based on approximate projections.

If he plays more than that, it's all profit.

If he plays less than that, they'll take a loss.

I think it's a pretty measured risk, and it has a better chance of at least breaking even or turning a huge profit than it does losing them money.

i dno where you're getting those projections (seems like a rather difficult thing to project, especially the nostalgia portion considering he isn't a 'legend' yet), but i dont have anything to refute it and you dont seem like the type to lie to me, so i'll believe you haha

I based it mostly on the fact that he's a top-ten jersey sell every year, and general trends in merchandise sales for athletes. I have no numbers, it's mostly guesswork.

I'm also ignoring ticket sales, extra sales for playoff games, etc., to which Crosby will likely somewhat contribute when he plays.

Sure. But it's risky for him, not for the team itself in terms of who they can ice.

Yeah. And even as a business decision, the merchandise they will sell just for Crosby alone will cover a huge part of that contract, to say nothing for ticket sales, concessions, etc. And if you have ever been to Pittsburgh, that is a town that spends MONEY on team merchandise.

He's the best player in the world and they locked up through his prime paying a salary that isn't even the top salary now, and sure as hell won't be near the top in 5 years. And as Loki said, LTIR can solve any injury issues with regards to the cap, so it's not like their roster will suffer in his injuries continue.

It's a great signing. And I don't think it's even a little risky when you consider everything he brings to the table - as a player, a community member, and as a business comodity. It's also very nice to know "your guy" is going to stay "your guy."

Congrats, Pens fans.

I don't see it the same way,I'm not up on his contract status was this a contract year for him or could they have waited until next season,,,if they could have waited,I would have been more comfortable with this if he had played all or most of a season before giving him this deal,,,,it would have given the team the chance to see if the concussion injury was behind him

It's a contract year, GG. He would've been a free agent, this time of year, 2013

well then they had to move on him...

I'm just very concerned about the injury is he completely over it or will it rear it's ugly head again this season,,,,,
