I don't see it the same way,I'm not up on his contract status was this a contract year for him or could they have waited until next season,,,if they could have waited,I would have been more comfortable with this if he had played all or most of a season before giving him this deal,,,,it would have given the team the chance to see if the concussion injury was behind him

The risk there is with a continually rising cap and having to possibly match offers from other teams, they might have had to pay him $11.4 mil a year at that point. And then he'd have to change his jersey number and I don't even know if you can be #114, though i'm sure Bettman would make an exception. ;)

The NHL just needs to do more to take advantage of crossover loyalties in their marketing. More frankenjerseys!! ;)

Let me sum this whole thing up...

It's a good signing. Pens' fans should not be worried that Crosby is making $8.7 million next year.

Pen's fans SHOULD be worried that Paul Martin and Chris Kunitz will make $8.7 million next year.

well then they had to move on him...

I'm just very concerned about the injury is he completely over it or will it rear it's ugly head again this season,,,,,

Injuries are impossible to predict. Sid is impossible to replace. Ray made the right move.

Provided Crosby stays healthy... he'll be playing the prime of his career in a Pittsburgh uniform.

@JasonPHT
I'm hearing AIG has insured Crosby's contract.

LOL. I like Kuni's number for what he brings.

But yes, Sidney Crosby makes $3.7 million more than Paul Martin. Hahaha.

So the beat writer from the Pgh Trib is tweeting Sid could've asked for maximum deal of 12 years, $168.48 million.

Anyone know where that number comes from??

Max salary is a certain percentage of the cap, which I believe is 14+ mill this year. Not sure why he's saying the 12 years unless he was just using that as a reference point since this one is 12.

The guy had eight points in six games in the playoffs. Now granted, that was in one of the highest scoring playoff series in recent history, but Crosby wasn't exactly dragging the team down. Plus he'll have had the offseason to get even more back in shape. I wouldn't want him going around headbutting guys football-style, but I'm cautiously optimistic about his health. Just hope nobody decides to be an asshole and stick out a high elbow at him.

Don't ever listen to a beat writer from Pittsburgh unless it's about a Steelers contract. Seriously, only Steelers contracts will they be on about.

There is nothing to fault at all in the deal. Pittsburgh locked up the savior 2.0. Sid gets paid a little less than open market might pay eventually, but he gets to stay where he wants. Plus, if he doesn't stay healthy and play it out, Pens get the space back.

There is no loser in this except the teams that compete with Pittsburgh.

That Shero character is one smart cookie. This is just a flat out "I earn my salary" kinda thing for him.

$14.04 is the max amount Sid could have asked for, so I guess the writer was just using the years they gave him.

Could you imagine a day where he wants only $9m and Shero would have said "nope, too much, I'll let you walk?" That would have pissed off everyone. That's why this is a good deal. If Sid wanted to leave, he'd make the league max. There's no doubt that he'd be the most sought after UFA since the lockout.

you see that is the thing that worries me,,
he will be hit hard and often just to see if he can take it,,I wouldn't call it dirty play but it will happen
