I don't think it's that black and white. There have always been two models in the NBA.The "superfriends" model or "the build through the draft model."

Three of the five greatest centers to have played in the NBA have been Lakers and none of them were drafted by them.

My take on it is that the Lakers do not typically build through the draft (and Im not counting Kobe or Bynum obviously) I dont think they are saying that all nba teams dont build through the draft as obviously a lot do. Historically the Lakers build through free agency, and maybe they are saying that in terms of the Lakers and not all NBA teams.

I get your point but my point extends all sports. You don't just go out and buy a team if you are starting a new franchise. You take several players that will get you by and then proceed by bettering your team through the draft.
