Bill Bergen for HoF!
Positives:
Marshawn Lynch - The Seahawk workhorse is getting his lightest workload since 2010, but is still driving the offense with nearly 20 touches per game. He will need to have a good game to keep guys like Justin Houston off Russell Wilson in the passing game. He is listed as questionable for the game today, and though some fans have laughed it off, it's something to be worried about. His absence would be a huge blow to the offense, but it would finally give Turbin and/or Michael a chance to show if they can be the back who would replace him.
Russell Wilson - He's gone through a rough stretch the last 3 games, but the biggest asset all Hawks fan see in their young QB is his poise. This game is a must win for Seattle. Though people laugh off the idea that catching the Cardinals could be hard, Seattle has just finished the easy part of their schedule. The remainder of the season sees Seattle playing 6 teams .500+ in the last 7 games (and the under .500 team has already beaten the Hawks once). Big pressure moments require big performances, Seattle needs a big performance for their leader.
Returners - The Seahawks should be getting 2 more starters back on their defense today. Chancellor and Smith will be needed against a solid running game, and brings the team that much closer to full strength (or at least as close to full strength as they will get).
Negatives:
Jamaal Charles - This guy has been one of the most dangerous home run threats for years. You may have him bottled all game, and then BAM, 80 yard TD run! He's most effective when there is a battery mate to help keep him fresh and Knile Davis has been filling that role well. Their #5 rushing attack will be facing Seattle's #4 running defense, and the defense has to close those holes quickly, and make Alex Smith throw the Chiefs to a win.
Arrowhead Stadium - Seattle has benefitted from CenturyLink a lot in their history, and now they get to go to a stadium that is just as loud (louder if you really care about the Guinness junk). So, how will the Hawks respond when the noise is designed to disrupt them, not help them?
28° - Today is supposed to be cold. Though Seattle is used to inclement weather, it isn't the same. It's usually easier to adjust to the cold than to slick rain, but it can still be an issue if you aren't used to it. Everything is harder, and muscles are tighter and cuts more difficult. It'll be especially hard on WR hands, so look to see the run game used to set up the pass even more than usually.
Matchups:
Justin Houston vs. Justin Britt - Britt has shown some flashes of being a solid NFL tackle, but has also beat pretty handily at times. Houston leads the NFL with 12 sacks, and Britt will most likely be the one who will try to keep him from adding to that total. Tamba Hali won't be a cake walk for Russell Okung, either.
Sean Smith/Marcus Cooper vs. Doug Baldwin/Jermaine Kearse - Seattle's WR will play a big role in this game, first as blockers, but they will also need to show up in the passing game. As Wilson has struggled, he will need more help from his wide outs to come out of it. Especially in the cold weather today. They'll need to make catches their bodies won't want to make.
Dontari Poe vs. Unger/Sweezy/Bailey - Poe is a massive human being with great football skill for the nose tackle position. Seattle's running game may just depend on how effectively they move Poe with as few blockers as possible, allowing others blockers to get up onto the Cheifs linebackers.
Overview:
I expect this game to be low scoring and for turnovers to play a big role in who comes out on top. Both teams have been really good at securing the ball this season, and not so great at taking it away. If Lynch/Turbin/Michael can run effectively and keep the ball off the ground, it'll put Seattle in a great position to get a win here. Russell Wilson will also need to curb his fumbling, as his 7 fumbles is second in the NFL. The Seahawks have the offense and the defense (both top 10) to win this game, they just need to come in and execute in a hostile environment in freezing temperatures against a very good opponent. Piece of cake, right?
