He was drafted by the Holmgren regime, so this makes some sense with the new FO willing to move on. still a bit of a surprise..
i think it's a smart deal for both sides
What in the fuck are the Browns doing up there? Why trade the #3 pick in the draft who you traded up to get for a pick that will be no earlier than 17th or 18th and could be a mid 20's pick?
It's a new regime, and you have to view those as sunken costs at this point..
Also look at the way the NFL is trending. Richardson was the only RB taken with a top 25 draft pick in the past 3 years. for the first time (ever? at least that I can remember) a RB wasn't drafted in the 1st rd this pas yr..
unless you're talking about a HOF-caliber transcendent talent RBs are no longer seen as being worthy of a high pick. it's a passing leauge and RBs have a short shelf life
The Browns are closer to the #1 pick (the move hurts them in the short term), they get an extra 1st rder, and they get out of 20 million dollar deal for a RB who was averaging 3.5 ypc..
The Colts get a potential franchise RB to pair with a franchise QB. Richardson will fare better in a good offense against weaker AFC south defenses..
I see the logic for both teams
Don't see why you think that is smart futball. The Colts will probably finish decent this year and give up a pick in the 15-25 range...how is that a better pick for the Browns than the 3rd they gave up for him? To boot...Richardson is arguably the best RB to come out of college than Peterson..JMHO.
I'm guessing that the new regime thinks they are more than a year away on offense..... Probably have to invest in a real qb in next year's first round. By the time they get the qb settled, Richardson would potentially have three years under his belt (after the 2014 season). Maybe they feel that the shelf life of a running back isn't long enough to make him worth a big investment when there are other holes to fill. Regardless, it has to be frustrating to be a Browns fan. They haven't had a single guy to be the face of the franchise in a LONG time.
Richardson is the best player on that team, to trade him for a mid 20's pick isn't a good football move.

Richardson isn't better than Joe Thomas, Joe Haden, Josh Gordon, Alex Mack, or Paul Kruger. I wouldn't trade Gio for Richardson straight up.

Not a single RB went in the first round this past draft. They just aren't valued like they once used to be. To get a 1st round pick for one is a good football move for a team that is obviously rebuilding over again and are trying to stockpile picks.
...right. because it's smart to trade a guy you took #3 overall and traded what a 4th and a 6th to get for a pick that will be at the worst 12-13 picks later?
