Wrong.... Pete is about competition and he would a given Russell his chance... Not saying he would a started over Manning because he was a rookie last year and Manning of course is a proven long time vet.. BUT Wilson would a got some first team snaps and he would a pushed Manning to the brink because of what Wilson brings... You underestimate the kid...

You would have had to commit to Peyton being the starter and that he not be pressed for the job to sell him to come to Seattle. If there was the possibility of losing one snap he doesn't sign.

I can not even frigging believe that were talking about what ifs. I know it's the off season and it's slow, but damn! As things turn out Seahawks found their franchise QB and when you start talking about contracts and caps...it's a no brainer...things turned out for the best and I'm happy as heck.

Next subject please.

The money that Peyton Manning would have commanded would put Russ Wilson on the second team offense. I'm not 100% sure of his contract, but I think Manning got 40 mil over 2 yrs. That type of money means your pretty much getting most if not all first team reps through training camp and preseason.

All those free agents the Seahawks signed? Not happening if they had inked Peyton Manning. I'm a fan of Peyton, but I have no regrets on how things turned out. Not one lick. Forget about Peyton, we have Russell Wilson and the future looks bright.

I have no regrets either. Here's to a possible decade of success and hopefully a few trophies in the case.

Damn man yall really bored lol...Thursday can't come fast enough

But to address the topic...

There's no chance Russell would have started over Peyton. Russell would've shined in the pre-season games and in practices and we would go hey that kid has a bright young future...in a couple of years after learning from Peyton and seeing Peyton bring home a superbowl ring for us...he can be our qb of the future

NO ONE in their right mind would have said...hey this kid is looking nice...let's start him over one of the best qbs in nfl history...

True... In the end it would a caused problems because NO WAY would Manning accept being on the bench...

You underestimate Pete Carroll.... Look at all the criticism he took starting Russell over Flynn... When Pete say's open competition he means open competition... If Manning didn't look right or if Russell outplayed him I"m telling you right now Pete would roll with Russell... That's why it's for the better Manning didn't come here because it would a caused issues... NO WAY would Manning accept that....

Except Manning is significantly better than Flynn, even at this stage of his career, and would have made significantly more money, even if it wasn't the kind of money he got from Denver. You can make a better case for starting a rookie over a guy with two starts under his belt and making a guaranteed $5 million a year than you can for starting a rookie over a legend with, at the time, 12 years and over 200 starts under his belt, including the playoffs, and making significantly more than a guaranteed $5 million a year . Can you imagine Carroll walking into Allen's office after he made the announcement that a rookie making less than a million a year was going to get the starting job over a legend making between 15 and 20 times that much? I know that Allen doesn't like to involve himself in personnel matters and is generally considered a hands-off owner, but that's a significant amount of money that would have been riding the pine and I don't think that Allen would have gone for it.

That's before you even take into account the fan reaction. We already had people last year thinking that not starting Flynn was tantamount to lighting money on fire. Can you imagine how much of an uproar there would have been if someone making 3-4 times as much as Flynn was didn't get the starting job over Wilson? Then consider the first couple months of Wilson's rookie year, when almost everybody, myself included, at one time or another suggested that he should be benched, if for no other reason than to see if Flynn could do any better with the offense that Wilson was told to run. People were making the phones at local radio stations ring off the hook, from the moment the decision to start Wilson was announced, that Carroll was a complete idiot and that the Seahawks had just wasted a butt-load of money. Obviously the decision Carroll made last year worked out well, but you don't sign someone for $20 million a year and then start somebody else, unless the guy making $20 million gets hurt. You don't even get to entertain the idea in public.

Keep in mind, too, that there was supposed to be an open competition for the job after Hasselbeck was allowed to leave, but Jackson was essentially given the job when Carroll realized that the only other quarterback on the roster was Charlie freaking Whitehurst, so that competition rule isn't so hard and fast that he's gonna go with it no matter what. Besides, a lot of the attributes that people say that Wilson has, beyond physical talent, are the same attributes that people have said Manning has. The only questions about Manning last year were physical ones about how well his neck would hold up if he got hit a lot and whether he'd get his arm strength back up to the point where he wasn't throwing wounded ducks all the time. Otherwise, he's respected around the league, has a fantastic work ethic (you'd have to to come back from what he came back from), is a smart field general and he's a winner.

Good points.... I think Pete knew Whitehurst just didn't have it... Whitehurst did have a couple ok game for us one in New York and one beating the Rams to get us a playoff spot... He was average to below average though no question...

Shouldn't this whole thread be locked? It clearly has nothing to do with reality and the start of it was a mistake in the first place.

Mods, close this garbage

Sure we were interesting in Manning. Multiple teams were, especially the Niners. Remember Harblah caught lying to the press about it? Alex Smith is my QB. Blah-blah-blah.

Denver did make the most sense for P Manning. AFC West provides him an easy path to the playoffs, plus the mile high advantage for opponents.

Harbaugh even said the words, "Alex Smith is our starting quarterback" after the QB switch. Now, it was clear he didn't mean that he was going to start - most knew that (before the announcement - he went on to say that it wasn't accurate to say that Kaepernick was a backup), but I feel he said that just for kicks (he really said that to be not as hard on Smith).

I obviously don't share your dislike/rivalry for Harbaugh because I'm a Niner fan, just saying Harbaugh will say what he wants to say, sometimes when he knows he's not fooling you and sometimes to paint one picture. It's very clear he doesn't like the media and would avoid them if he could (except to make his statements).
