Sources: Rangers seek a deal with Cuban pitcher Miguel Alfredo Gonzalez
Two baseball officials said the Texas Rangers are among a handful of teams pushing to sign right-hander Miguel Gonzalez, a former standout on Cuba’s national team.

I think the same article said he has not pitched in games for three years. Big risk there.

Cuba suspended him for 2 years for trying to leave the country and he has pitched sporadically since defecting. But if he is signed it will because of a good word from the scouts that are observing him.

Hope it is smething that blows us away causes a buzz much like when we got Cliff Lee.

Me too. In fact, I hope it is getting Lee again, since I think he could help us more than any other potentially available pitcher. Not sure whether the Phillies are going to throw in towel, though. They travel to NYM, St. Louis, and Detroit after the break. I'm hoping that they are around ten games back by the end of the month and Lee wants to give it another go in Texas.

Lee would have to waive his no trade clause.

Yeah, that's what I meant about him wanting to return. Any idea of whether he would want to come back? I would think that he'd welcome a chance to help accomplish what he so nearly helped us to accomplish a few years ago. Then again, I was surprised when he chose to go to Philly, so maybe I'm wrong.

I really doubt Lee wouldnt waive it. I truly believe he enjoyed his time here and probably wants to play for a team that contends year in and year out every year. Philly is past its prime and has to rebuild. I'd like cliff lee too, but not so much to the point where I'd give away much more than I'd give the cubs for Garza

i'd rather give a little more for a pitcher we would have for a couple of years than give up quality for a RENTAL

I also doubt it WILL be cliff lee, or a cliff lee like deal. I think something similar to making that impact would be like trading for david price, or someone like that. The market is slim at the deadline this year. Im almost positive we're gonna make a move or two, but i doubt its gonna make an impact like the cliff lee deal made unless its a name we havent heard about yet...

BTW here's a video of miguel gonzalez a few weeks ago. Really really unimpressive from this video. Definitely not worth 5 yr at 60 mil for someone who hasnt pitched one mlb inning yet. Sitting lower 90's with average location.

Guess you don't want a TORP

I don't want 18 months of a pitcher on the DL waiting to happen after we've given up our best prospects.

You said the same thing about Bourne. "Guess you don't want an impact player." I said Martin will be better. How'd that turn out?

Miguel Alfredo Gonzalez pitches for the Toros de Tijuana - YouTube

“He’s a real talent,” one scout told Miller. "He had some bone spurs, and he’s still building up, but his stuff is top shelf. He threw it over the plate, and he can make it move. He’s really good.
“He’s like a classic Cuban guy in that he toys with all [his pitches]. He throws a curve that’s bigger, he makes it go wide, he throws it straight down . . . it’s like 10 different pitches. And he throws them all over the plate.”
Gonzalez threw his fastball mostly at 94-95 mph, but he touched 96. He also throws a cutter, the many curves and a changeup.

Scouts disagree with you. Btw he sits at 92-94 with up to 96

Bourn was injured.

But I just showed you that video where he was 90-92... haha

either way though, maybe that was a bad example, but all im saying is his stuff really didnt jump out to me at all. im no scout, but at times i like to think i know at least something (former college pitcher and i work around some scouts everyday). I could be wrong simply cuz I know nothing about the dude, but it just wasnt really that impressive.
