Still don’t regret the trade or Ragans.

The World Series makes it worth paying the price.
This is a very popular opinion except on this board lol.

Will say they were overpays but without them we don’t make the playoffs

And if we even lost the World Series the umbrage would be worse seeing how Ragans is doing and probably deservingly so

So the board has to be happy that Leiter and Rocker are starting bs coming out for relief

But post ASB we may see especially Rocker out of the pen to preserve innings methinks

I very much regret the events that led to Ragans being traded. It was an organizational failure that I hope never comes close to happening again.

And I don't see where Chapman's presence was the difference in winning the World Series. Gray and Heaney being in the pen during the playoffs made the difference. We were horrible in the regular season.

I wonder how many more games we would have won that year had Ragans been in the rotation?

Im no big Chapman fan, but he was a big part of a crucial game 1 win in Baltimore. He induced a double play and struck out the next guy in the eighth inning.

We won game 1 in Baltimore by the slimmest of margins. We threw a bullpen game and the orioles threw their ace. Everyone remembers Heim throwing out Henderson at 2nd in the 9th but they don’t send him if the Orioles tied the game or took the lead off Chapman in the 8th.

The orioles were a very dangerous young team and that series could only go 5 games total so that game 1 win was massive,

Chapman has always thrown intense heat but he gave me near heart attacks due to lack of control
One thing was certain we needed relief help and he helped regardless the lopsidedness

Joe Q. Public says make this trade 100 out of 100 if it nets you a WS - we would see pitchforks come out otherwise

Definite collateral damage and yes it is also true that I hate giving away promising pitching and one tutored by Cole H

But that WS I will admit was salved by the trade

Now that CY has shown a propensity to give up good pitching is some of our promising guys like Santos safe at the trade deadline?

In EH article he is compared to Dombroski

So happy to have baseball back. Won't be going to this, but I'll be seeing the Rangers when they visit Boston. Good luck this year.

I wonder how many more games we would have won that year had Ragans been in the rotation?
I also wonder how many more games we would have won that year had we fixed the bullpen the previous offseason, like we should have. Probably a half dozen more, at least, would have been won.

What most never take into account are the moves that would have been made had we not made that one particular trade the exact same way. Had Ragans broken his leg in spring training that year, we would have still traded for a reliever. We would have just had to trade someone else and maybe for someone besides Chapman.

One bad assumption is that every single thing that happens in a successful year, contributes to that success in such a way that the success would not have happened without every one of those things happening. Sometimes success happens inspite of certain things and not because of them.

The best you can do is learn from those mistakes. I think that the acquisition of six relievers this offseason proves that they did learn from those almost catastrophic mistakes from two offseasons ago. Good for CY and company that they did learn.

Let's never again allow a pitcher to improve over an offaeason amd then ignore that vast improvement, that even national writers took note of in spring training.

Let's never again fail to address bullpen needs or any other issues in the offseason, so that we feel we have to make a panic trade.

Learn from mistakes and do better, like they appear to have done.
