It's cute you're so dismissive about something you really don't know the first thing about. The currently playoff systems is basically an Alabama Invitational. There's a growing number of people unhappy with it. Part of it has to do with people sick of seeing the same teams in it, part is butthurt certain conferences are left out, and now a growing number unhappy that teams like UCF don't have a "fair" shot. However you look at it, change is a coming. Deny it all you want, but you'll look like a damn fool.

I have nothing against change, but facts are facts. There is nothing happening on the playoff front prior to 2025 unless ESPN thinks they can make money off it and a G5 playoff is wanted by no one who actually makes any decisions regarding college football. The only place that those two things aren't true is in your mind.

And why wouldn't ESPN make more money off more football games?

They're going to beat that eight team drum you just watch

(Oh and this is where actual conversation will attempted to be derailed by our resident second graders)

Because they are already broadcasting 35 of 40 bowl games and they literally own the 15 bowls at the bottom of the pecking order.

The P5 teams aren't willing to go to 8 unless ESPN is willing to pony up significantly more money to show the extra two games. Those two games like represent an increase of 20 million viewers on the top end based on the difference in ratings between the playoffs and NY6 games. They are already showing all the NY6 games, so it is really this increase in viewers they would be paying for. The question is, since going to 4 teams already hurt the viewers and attendance for all the other bowls, would going to 8 teams cost them more money on the shitty bowls, where they make money on everything than they would make up on the playoffs.

I think the answer is yes, as do many Disney executives.

So yes, ESPN would make more revenue off an 8 team playoff, but anybody that has ever run a business knows that revenue and profits are two different things, and I don't think ESPN increases their profits with an 8 team playoff, because they would have to pay too much for the rights.

I definitely see the complexities involved with changing the dynamics of the CFP mid tv deal and you outline very strong points I guess I see with the powers that be desiring additional playoff teams that puts ESPN in a stronger negotiating position to help see that change through while not affecting their bottom line.

Aah gotcha. Mah bad for misreading #1. You would still consider Auburn and TCU good OOC opponents even with their records?

The problem with that is, even a couple of the P5 commissioners point out that a true split would also likely lead to P5's only playing P5's and then everyone loses. I don't agree it HAS to mean that, but that's the narrative.

If you don't have P5's, particularly the middle/lower tier ones playing at least 2-3 G5's every year you have to throw out the bowl system as well, or at least how you qualify for them because those easy to reach .500 seasons vanish.

It isn't just the G5's that profit from this existing relationship. They would lose millions in such a deal with lost revenue for traveling to those P5 teams that feast off of them. P5's would end up having *gasp* ONLY 6 home games and would lose a fuck ton of money as well.

I'm entirely for the idea of splitting, but the reality is a lot of the power elite will never go for it and the G5's can't afford to let go of it either.

I really don't know why everyone assumes that G5 teams getting their own playoff would have to mean the end of cross games between them and the P5. To me it could work if they still had an agreement in place for those added games.
Sounds like G5 teams should seek counsel from Yossarian.

After that the narrative changes based on what teams are left. Some years it's best win, others it's best loss , others it's the eye test.
Truth. One year a one loss team can lose to a 4-8 team and still make the playoffs. Another year a team can lose to a 6-6 team and not make the playoffs.

What's the hesitancy with putting concrete guidelines in that must be met in order to make the playoff?

Win your league
Have an SoS 65 or better ( top half of FBS )
Have 2 losses or less

Those are 3 reasonable bare minimum criteria you could implement that no one should have a real issue with . There wouldn't have been a single year so far where we wouldn't have been able to field a 4 team playoff that would've been legitimate

People don't really care about expansion . They just want a better understanding of how it works and they want it to be fair and consistent year to year

That could create an interesting dilemma for G5 teams.

As you point out, the lower tier P5 teams depend on those games for the wins that make them bowl eligible and the G5 teams need the payday.

Would G5 teams start avoiding some of these "payday games" for fear that the loss could keep them out of the playoff? Or would they go for the money? Would the G5 schools diminish or just not count losses to P5 teams?
Thus is why the P5s are willing to keep forking over enough money their favorite whores are happy.

Hard to do. The Committee would have to adopt a formula. Either way, it's not right to assume a P5 team has a better schedule than G5 simply because they're in a P5 conference.
Especially with some of the goofy unbalanced scheduling some of the P5s have.

How many people believe that the near future CFP participants WILL NOT come from the pool of teams in the top 20 recruiting classes in 2017, 2018 and 2019?

I definitely see the complexities involved with changing the dynamics of the CFP mid tv deal and you outline very strong points I guess I see with the powers that be desiring additional playoff teams that puts ESPN in a stronger negotiating position to help see that change through while not affecting their bottom line.

Except the P5 conference representatives are on record saying they are happy with the current 4 team format. If the P5 conferences aren't on board and ESPN isn't on board, then effectively no one is on board, at least not anyone that can change the outcome. Truthfully though, only ESPN matters, they are the ones paying. People can talk about other networks, but only ESPN has enough skin in the game to want to pay what the P5 conferences would want, it is not as valuable to anybody else. If ESPN wanted to throw money at it, the P5 reps would start singing out of a different hymnal and expanded playoffs would happen tomorrow. Has anybody noticed ESPN throwing around money lately?

So were we not just discussing Delaney?

And if you think the PAC 12 will sit idly by if they miss a third year in a row eh....I don't see it happening.

Adding more teams isn't going to change that dumbass. If you really want to stop seeing Alabama in there so much, go back the other direction.

We have 1 champion not 2. And "4 best teams " is a facade . It's a guess . Criteria helps in every aspect of life .
