hate this trade

Dunno why... Saints aren't going anywhere this offseason and that defense has been a HUGE liability forever. Brees is a big cap hit but the Saints aren't necessarily sitting pretty on cap room either, and SOMEONE would give Cooks $14M (like the Titans) at this point considering what guys like Britt, Woods, and Jackson are getting. Wide receivers are rarely worth giving those kind of contracts... and the Saints have always had a high powered offense. Cooks will do fine in New England but if he went to a mediocre team he wouldn't have the #s he does.

Meanwhile Saints get a 1st and 3rd out of it.. in a draft class that is decently stacked in the secondary, and they can nab a D-Lineman with their 1st (or potentially trade up) and maybe even snag a QB if one falls in the 2nd to study under Brees.

It's a bad trade.

I disagree, but whatever. JUST saw walter football gave his thoughts too. He agrees with me on this one:

Patriots acquire WR Brandin Cooks, 4th-rounder from Saints for 1st- and 3rd-round picks
My apologies for being slow with these grades Friday evening. I just got home from a wedding rehearsal dinner (my fiancee's sister is getting married tomorrow), and I'll get to all of the grades shortly.

I have to say that despite it being speculated for days now, I'm still shocked that this deal went through. It's kind of crazy that the Patriots will have Brandin Cooks in their offense. I didn't even think they'd be in the market for a receiver because they had Julian Edelman, Chris Hogan, Malcolm Mitchell and maybe Michael Floyd on the roster (plus Rob Gronkowski), but Bill Belichick apparently thought differently.

It's going to be fun to watch Tom Brady have a new weapon like Cooks. He hasn't had a dynamic, downfield threat like Cooks since Randy Moss. It might be instinctive to point out that Cooks could decline because he won't be playing with Drew Brees anymore, until you remember that he'll now be paired with Brady, and there theoretically shouldn't be a drop-off. The price is a bit steep for my blood, but at least New England didn't have to surrender Malcolm Butler.

I like the move for the Patriots, but I think the Saints are the winners of this deal. Cooks made it known that he didn't want to be on the roster anymore, and the Saints have two strong receivers without him in Michael Thomas and Willie Snead. New Orleans now has two first-round selections in a very deep draft, so they can use those picks to improve their woeful defense.

Grade for Patriots - B+
Grade for Saints - A-

I don't get it at all buy am I gonna criticize Bellicheck? He's a FA in a year. Why give up a 1st and a 3rd only to have to hand him a huge contract on top off all that. Don't get it at all. The Pats were fine at WR???

Because they are making moves to win now. Brady may not have many years left and adding a weapon like Cooks is going to be good in the short term at least.

I resent this but the AFC East will do mostly nothing and outside of maybe the Raiders, the top AFC teams are woeful matchups with the Pats.

Yep so sick of this team making the AFC title game/superbowl every year.....and to have my team help them just make me sick.

I think they are trying to obviously make another run this year and then they are going to let Edelman walk (2017 UFA) and retain Cooks. Cooks wants to be on a contender and the Patriots are that, so they can franchise tag him and then work something out contractually (or just flat out extend him now since they have $44M in cap) and lock him up till 27-28.

Cooks is a younger and faster option than Edelman and he'll only be 24 as opposed to 31 for Edelman. Cooks can be used the exact same way Edelman was plus Edelman is injured off and on. Cooks was out his first year but he's been solid since then.

Belichick is thinking ahead. Edelman is 32 and has taken a lot of hits. So Cooks brings in youth and depth.

He gets Cooks hungry to earn that next contract maybe with another team. Heard this before?

Rinse and repeat.
