Unless they extend him, I won't grade this trade. I'll be a little upset if he walks and we passed up on some good talent in this draft (defense is pretty deep and good this yr). We need help on the edge and LB. If they can extend him, then fine. Guess we'll have to wait and see....

I think Belichick sees the deep draft and thinks he can pick up some good players later on. He loves the 3rd and 4th round for that.

The best OL in the NFL, the best RB in the NFL and a good young QB should make them the favorites. And I'm not even drinking.

How could they be the favorites when they had all that this year and couldn't muster a measly playoff win.

I wouldn't say it's a steal. Patriots seem like the only team willing to give up a first round pick for Cooks. Saints also got 3 picks in the first 42 to help our defense

Maybe not a steal but a solid trade for the Pats. They don't need 1st round picks at this point. They need to fill the roster with role players. Mid round picks in a deep draft accomplishes that.

The last main piece is signing Hightower.

Bill Belichick is a damn genius. Pick up Kony Ealy for what constitutes 8 draft spots (72nd pick instead of 64th pick). Pick up Brandin Cooks for the 32nd and a 3rd round pick, get a 4th in return.

And I'd bet Belichick trades Garafallo to Cleveland and not only replenish all those picks, but pick up higher picks in each round.

It sucks having to watch the rich get richer, but it is entertaining to see how Belichick works.

It was a salary dump more or less. They didnt want to pay the 750k roster bonus due Monday.
Bills had man love for him since oregon state. In the pats saints joint practices bill said "im glad hes not in our division and we dont have to see him twice a year"

You seem like an intelligent fan of football.

Bill works on his own level.

Trade market has been underutilized for years for non-QB's. There's almost certainly a market inefficiency there somewhere. Browns demonstrated one avenue with negative assets. Another is what Hoody is doing perhaps. Not an Ealy guy though, so shrugs.

Belichick seems to be able to identify talented players being used inefficiently by other teams, who would fit into his system. He then uses their strengths to make the Pats better.

As a Lions fan, I got to watch it this year. Kyle Van Noy was atrocious for Detroit. Belichick throws a 6th or 7th round pick to Detroit and I get to watch him starting for NE and getting a sack in the SB.

Ealy isn't going to be a superstar, but he is a guy who can get to the QB and I'm sure will be used as a situational pass rusher and all Belichick gave up to get him was 8 spots in the draft. He is also young and teams can never have enough edge rushers.

Yeah solid trade for both teams IMO.....If the Saints draft the correct player/position with the 2 picks they got from the Pats then I'll be happier than I am now.

I agree with your assessment. You don't typically get a 1st rounder out of a guy that wants out.
The 8 spots forward in the pick trad-off is meaningless. (for either)

I'd say decent trade for both sides. Patriots going all in with what's left of the Brady - Belichick era. Retaining Butler is big.

Yeah, I am a bit surprised the Titans or Eagles couldn't sweeten the pot but this isn't an unreasonable trade in terms of precedent.

Great trade for both teams. Cooks is probably going to give New England more immediate production now than anyone they would have drafted with the 32nd overall pick. New Orleans gets to build more in the draft.

Funny thing is they have never drafted a WR or even a RB in the first round, in the Belichick era. Last 1st round WR was Terry Glenn in 96
