Right or wrong, I also thought the fact that Letang returned in that game (not to mention scored the winning goal) might lessen the blow somewhat. Not saying that the result should or shouldn't be taken into account but that often seems to be the case. If Letang ended up with a concussion and missed considerable time for the same play, I can't help but wonder what type of suspension he gets if he got 3 with this result.

I just watched the replay with a way better view than what I first saw. I would say he deserves a fine at most. Letang looked up and STILL put his head back down. Goodnight, Irene...

Sherriff Shanaban has specifically referenced whether an injury occurred in some of his videos so, right or wrong, it's apparently being considered as a factor on some plays.

Though not all apparently, at least if the offender is sorry.

No matter what it happened against the Penguins so it is favoritism from the league....:blabla:...sorry had to go there.....

Seriously, I am surprised he got 3 games for his first offense, one at most. Letang got two for what was his second offense. Still inconsistent, but hopefully by seasons end he will have it straight.

He was shooting the puck. I see nothing wrong with him looking down to line up a slap shot.

The onus is on Patches to deliver a clean check. He didn't do it, and he has to suffer the consequences.

eh, whatever. Tanger was shooting the puck. I'm all for open ice, hip checks. Too bad, Max missed the hip and went for the cranium, instead. tough shit. You reap what you sow. Penalty seemed a bit harsh, but what the fuck do u care? It's a divisional rival! You should be happy

I do not have a problem with the suspension.

The only thing that bugs me is like most others I think Letang sees the check coming and still puts himself in a dangerous position. Players used to be told not to do that, told to protect themselves. I don't think its smart (or good for the game) if players do not worry about how vulnerable they are because they think the rulebook will protect them.

This situation worries me more when the play is along the boards. I can already see where this increased attention on dangerous play is headed. Just wait until February and March when the games get a little more meaningful. I'm sure we are going to see players put themselves in a dangerous spot to draw the boarding penalty. It's almost a guarantee that this will happen. And Shanny will have the youtube ready and waiting.

As for Letang... i just don't see how you can blame him for unloading a shot from where he was on the ice. Granted, the top of the slot is a dangerous place, but to pass up his position, and take the puck somewhere else for a lower percentage shot doesn't make sense to me.

This mentality is dangerously close to making the NHL a non-contact sport. Even growing up playing minor hockey there were times when you couldn't, or wouldn't, make the best play because YOU WILL GET ROCKED.

It's Letang's job to make the most of a scoring opportunity just like it's Patches's job to prevent scoring chances in his own end. Best way to do that? Take the man. For decades now players have gone to option B when confronted with the fact that they will likely get hurt if they make the most useful play with the puck.

Examples are suicide passes. The best play sometimes is to hit the guy streaking up the middle. Rarely do we see it though because the guy receiving the puck will get killed. Should players just start passing puck up the middle into their teammates feet? Well... that was the best option. Suspend the guy who tattooed him?

Making the right decision, weighing risk, productivity and personal safety, in a split second is what makes these guys NHL players. If Letang decides that he sees a guy coming and still drops his head to take a shot he, and his head, are fair game IMO. In that situation he is either A) Very brave and willing to take a hell of a shot to make a play, or B) Making the wrong decision and deserves to be hit.

I think that Shanny dropped the ball on this one and I hope it doesn't become a trend.

But, it also makes them human, and not robots (twins excluded :)). Your point is well received, but the NHL is coming down hard on hits to the dome. Pittsburgh has already had to pay the price for their own actions, Letang included. The League wants it to be safer, therefore, they must ban. I'd rather see them do it with more consistency...
