Well, let's all hope he isn't going to get worse, in spite of the early evidence.

Look, I don't hate Odor. Fact is, I like the guy. But our infield defense sucks and he's part of the sucking. And next year, it's gonna get worse due to Beltre getting a year older (surely he can't just keep doing this, can he?) and having a top flight 1st baseman going to Boston.

I'm pretty much on an island in wanting to move Odor to the OF. But it's that time of year for mere "speculations" and perhaps some nonsense.

Hey, we're just talking here, right?
I am on that island as well.

That is correct we are just talking. I am probably too conservative on making moves like this.

I don't know about you being too conservative.

After all, I haven't heard peep one from anyone within the organization saying anything about moving Odor.

But it sure makes sense to me. Me and my island of 3. ha ha

I think I would approach Odor with the idea at the same time I approached him about a long-term contract extension. The sooner the better.

Like this idea a lot.

And ya know, any move doesn't have to be forever.

Let's say Profar plays terrific and someone comes to us at the break an offers a bunch (inserting pitching), then he's right back at 2nd.

The problem with Evan's reasoning is shown in the next to the last sentence below. The fact is it has NOT worked well the last two years. It isn't about playing past 162 games the way JD puts it either. It is all about winning 11 games past the 162 mark.

Don't be surprised by the Rangers' quiet winter meetings, they make their big bets elsewhere | SportsDay

And so, despite a pretty lucrative TV contract and a sudden increase in the value of the club thanks to a new stadium deal, the Rangers aren't going to make it rain. Ray Davis is not a make-it-rain kind of guy.

Besides, while the value of the club has increased significantly, that doesn't amount to actual cash flow right now, and the Rangers will have to pick up another $500 million or so in costs for the still-to-be-designed stadium.

Here is the kind of guy Davis is, though: a savvy businessman, who has shown no signs of dreaded New Owner Syndrome, the chief symptom of which is a madness that leads to spending wildly and abandoning all business principles.

Instead, Davis, Neil Liebman and Bob Simpson have continued to operate a franchise that regularly ranks among the top third in baseball in terms of payroll. They have listened to their baseball operations staff and been willing to expand the budget when persuasive arguments were made about value acquisitions. In each of the last two summers, they've significantly expanded the payroll to add a No. 1 pitcher, an All-Star catcher, three controllable relievers and a veteran DH.

And there is no indication they won't be willing to do that again.

"We will wait and see where our payroll is at," general manager Jon Daniels said. "We've been a top-10 payroll team for about five years, and we've played past Game No. 162 in six of the last seven years.

"At the end of the day, the big issue is not where your payroll is at in December, but it's about putting a winning team on the field during the season. Our ownership has continually been willing to step up when we have had that chance."

Over the last two years, in particular, the Rangers have done what they needed to do in the winter, then gotten more bold and creative around the trade deadline. They have added payroll and control. In that regard, they have found something of a market inefficiency.

It's worked well the last two years.

There is no reason to think the formula won't work again.

Only thing is we don't usually trade players who are playing terrific unless we are out of contention and their contract is about to be up.

Also, I wonder if at some point Andy Ibanez might make one of those guys expendable. He will be an interesting prospect to watch this season.

Good points.

I guess what I should have said if he played well for the entire season, then someone might want a proven healthy Profar for SS the following season.

Hadn't really thought much about Ibanez, but he may be worth watching for 2018.

I know it seems that way but there seems to be too many things that could go south with it

Word around the campfire is that the Rangers offered Profar to the Nats for Joe Ross. Nats declined.

This might be one of those worth keeping an eye on.

They certainly need a SS, but we certainly need a good young arm too.
