I think the way the season ended left such a bad taste in some folks mouths that they are having a hard time discussing baseball right now. We will have to keep it going until they come back I guess. lol

Once season ends we have decision to make on 60 man DL. Rule 5 exposure, options and arbitration,Fall and winter league..... Much more to keep a Ranger die hard up to date with pulsebeat. I love all sports have done the fantasy football but my chips have been all in for Rangers. Some sports guys like Adam M state we had a very good year and I am not going to argue they but until we get the WS there will be no baseball satisfaction. Called a diehard because the death of a season is tough. Takes a while for one to get back on the horse for next season

I think this is a bit harsh perspective but sure some see it this way.

I don't find it harsh at all. Just matter of fact.

I believe this states what some have been alluding too for a while. And that is, "the FA market is going to be way, way over priced, and it may be a better option to take full advantage of what we have, and/or make a trade." And the trade option will be steeper due to the FA market.

Ok despite obvious shortfall in elite FA SP, my thought process has been wondering what team evaluation of Dutch is and what does he project as going forward, Is he a #3,#4, or #5? My point is if he is projected as a #5 which to me is the case then we pay him as such. If he has outside potential to pitch above that then perhaps we offer incentives if he reaches thresholds

I would rather not pick up option which to me is a price for a # 3 but leave open renegotiation of current contract if we think he has a future. I think doctors know more than my eye test. If he refuses the let him test market and we see what we can do. We are unfortunately reaping the consequences of not not developing enough SP and trading away a couple of good potential starters in Cole trade.

This is what makes the fall interesting re Ranger BB to me.

Short version is I do not pick up option but still try to negotiate

I think doctors know more than my eye test. ha ha ha.....Bout time someone owned up to this. We're all such "excellent" GM's aren't we? ha ha

This is what makes the fall interesting re Ranger BB to me. Me too. Think it's called "speculating" and it makes it fun moving digits, without actually moving them, or paying the consequences either, which is even better.

Short version is I do not pick up option but still try to negotiate You're more bogged down on what we pay for a # 3 vs a # 4/5. I'm not. Those things have a way of working themselves out. It seems, year-in-out, # 5's turn into # 3's and # 3's are shipped to AAA. Cases in point, last year before injuries, both Griffin and Colby were pitching like # 2's.

Going back to your eye test statement, what sorta mess are we in if the doc's say Holland is iffy at best, Colby is no longer capable of pitching at a "medium" level, and Griffin is toast?

This is going to come to,a decision being made ---my guess within 3 weeks probably a week after WS.

Should we poll this site? I say do not pick up option. I know others disagree. Haha

Venezuela could be where Rangers’ Gallo gets jump-start

In addition to the need to produce, the atmosphere is different in winter ball. The fans and the intensity that come with games can be eye-opening.

Being in Venezuela should be even more eye-opening. The economy is in shambles. Some citizens are eating garbage to survive. Toilet paper is a luxury item. Isn’t socialism great?

So maybe, just maybe, the Rangers want Gallo to see how reacts to those things as much as getting his swing straightened out.

Gallo, after all, is still 22. He turns 23 next month. Had he played college baseball, it’s unlikely he would have seen the major leagues yet. He’s young.

While he still has development to do, perhaps he also has some maturing to do. Not everyone can be Nomar Mazara.

The bottom line is the Rangers believe that Gallo can be an impact player in their lineup for years to come, even as soon as 2017. He won’t be handed a job in spring training, though he is expected to compete for one.

He will play first base in Venezuela to groom him for a potential — maybe likely — vacancy the Rangers could have at first base if Mitch Moreland is not re-signed. The Rangers also have a hole at designated hitter if Carlos Beltran isn’t re-signed.

There are at-bats to be had, in other words, and Gallo can earn them.

Winter ball could be what jump-starts his career.

Looks like a good match. Gallo's swing looks like the conditions in Venezuela.

It won't matter if we don't find some pitching.

Yeah the window looked so open when we got Yu. Perez and Harrison on club friendly contracts Dutch and Colby too. But injuries crippled the pitching depth. So yes trades like this come back to bite and continue to irritate. What we got did not get it done. All in the midst of the Ryan/JD camp drama and pitch count controversies. Nolan was a horse and his way IMO was not applicable to all pitchers. Still SMH

I honestly don't know if we should or shouldn't pick up the option. Frankly, I have had my fill with Holland. But like it or not, our pitching situation is pretty dire.

Hamels looked poor over the last month of the season, and perhaps all those innings have taken a toll. Yu can't stay healthy. what if the team/doctors say Lewis is done, Griffin is no longer ML ready, and don't pick up the option on Dutch, then what do we have?

As winding used to say, "you need to have 10 guys ready to be a SP." And we're struggling to find 5 to start 2017 and that's pretty disconcerting.

Thanks for posting my thoughts. I think it was you who said we may have to go with two of the three Derek/AJ/Colby and it very well could be. FA or trades is very expensive and the Dodgers just proved that big money is not always the answer. The J's pitching was pretty good and yet not necessarily big money guys. What can we learn from them?

Yeah it was me, and I meant to include Martinez in this bunch too. But I wasn't necessarily making a prediction just saying this could come about.

Our farm system, especially from a pitching perspective, can't afford to be tampered with much for 2017 IMO. We gave up so much to get Hamels, remember? And don't take that wrong. I was on board with the move then, and I'll accept the consequences, for better or worse.

I'd love to see us get a solid # 3 from the FA market. Don't care who, nor how much we pay. Just get a guy who we think can stay upright and give us 6 innings night in and out.
