Ok here is my shot in the dark
Including buyout 5 mill. That way he is a 4 or a five, gives depth and gives us option to not pick up Colby depending on assessment. He will have to recreate himself and learn how to spot his FB and refined his slider but probably worth risk at that amount. We shall see what market does IMO Balt overpaid for Gallardo. Bottom line is 11 mill paid means you expect him to perform like your 3 which to me is not a good buy in.
It is $9.5 million to consider since that buy out has to be paid if he leaves. Him staying only costs $9.5 million. Good luck finding anyone onthe open market for $5 million who deserves to be in a big league rotation even at the 5 spot. I think anyone who signs for less than what Holland will cost will be just as big of a gamble as Derek is. Of course maybe the grass on the other side seems greener.

Not surprised you disagree but Holland does not enthuse. 11mill seems like #3 money to me but I may be wrong

Either way the cost is 9.5 million. Question is it better to keep him or not. That's what JD gets paid for. My opinion is he won't help if he stays.

Admittedly, I'm rooting for the tribe, but at the same time, it's hard to watch them have success in knowing that we match up well with them and probably would have beaten them.

How on earth can you even say such a thing?

Our 3 starting pitchers went a combined 10 1/3 innings, and had an ERA of 13.98.

We would have beaten no-one with that kind of performance.

it is not just 2017 that has to be considered but there is also a 2018 team option at $11.5M with a $1M buyout that comes into play. Holland has not shown that he is worth the kind of money that he is owed for those 2 years. Let him walk and then when no one else offers him $9.5M go with a lower number of $6M for 2017.

If you let him go because he isn't earning his 9.5, do you think he will be better two years later at less money? Explain.

Different lineup + different approach = different outcome

not saying he will ever be a #3 earning #3 money but at less money he would be an adequate #5

The futures of starting pitchers Derek Holland and Colby Lewis with the Texas Rangers is uncertain.

rumorcentral_16x9_203x114.png
The Rangers are undecided about picking up Holland's $11 million team option for 2017 and about re-signing Lewis, reports MLB.com's T.R. Sullivan. Both Holland and Lewis are eligible to become free agents otherwise.

Holland, 30, had a 4.95 ERA in 22 games the season. The lefty went 7-9 in 20 starts and struck out 67 batters over 107⅓ innings. He spent two months on the disabled list due to shoulder inflammation, returning to the active roster in late August. Holland was moved to the bullpen late in the regular season but wasn't activated for the the American League Division Series.

Holland also has an $11.5 million option for 2018, but the Rangers aren't obligated to exercise options for both years at the same time.

Lewis, 37, was out from late June to mid-September with a strained lat muscle. The righty went 6-5 with a 3.71 ERA in 19 starts, striking out 73 batters in 116⅓ innings. Lewis struggled after returning from the disabled list, losing all four of his final regular-season starts and posting a 6.38 ERA. He gave up five earned runs in two innings in the Rangers' eventual loss to the Toronto Blue Jays in a win-or-go home situation in Game 3 of the ALDS.

Lewis was signed to a one-year, $6 million deal this season.

General manager Jon Daniels said the Rangers will pick up Jonathan Lucroy's $5.25 million option for 2017, reports Sullivan.

Texas will be active in the pitching market, looking for starters to add to the rotation of Cole Hamels, Yu Darvish and Martin Perez, Sullivan writes. Per Sullivan, Daniels said the Rangers still have enough talent in the minors to make a trade -- an asset in a year with a free-agent market that's viewed as below average.

They are two separate options though. The 2018 option isn't relevant at this point yet. If he does rebound then that second option would be very beneficial. So that option can help, but doesn't have to hurt us in any way. I don't think he gets less than $8-9 million on the open market so if we are unwilling to sign him at the option price I doubt he comes back here unless he just wants to stay really bad. I can see there being some discussion on whether it is wise to sign him at the option price, but thinking he can eventually be had for anything close to $6 million is a pipe dream in my estimation.

I do believe if Holland had played somewhere else his entire career and JD signed him to a one year deal on the open market for $9 million or so that some who are against keeping him now would be saying JD had made a good one year gamble.
