Cishek always scares me when he comes in so this one isn't so bad. Plus, Ramirez is an upgrade over Moore at the current moment.

I'm still pissed they brought him last Saturday night to face Judge, Miranda was settled down and should've been given the chance to face him

Cishek has been inconsistent at times with the Mariners, but in 85 games over 2016-2017 he has a 2.98 ERA.

In return we get Erasmo Ramirez who is so inadequate he can't stick in the rotation.

Pro: We get a controllable #5 in exchange for a rental upper-tier bullpen arm
Con: Erasmo Ramirez kinda sucks

Summary of the Mariners trades so far. (#) = Prospect ranking in the Mariners system

Gone:
- Tyler O'Neill, OF (#2)
- Brayan Hernandez, OF (#7)
- Brandon Miller, RHP (#16)
- Pablo Lopez, RHP (NR)
- Lukas Schiraldi, RHP (NR)
- Steve Cishek, RHP (2.85 ERA in 85 IP 2016-2017)

Received
- Marco Gonzales, LHP (#11)
- David Phelps, RHP (2.63 ERA in 136 IP 2016-2017)
- Erasmo Ramirez, RHP (4.22 ERA in 160 IP from 2016-2017, 90 appearances, 9 of which being starts. Career

I don't see how this makes us better this year, next year, or 3 years from now. Honestly for what we have given up, I don't find that the team has been all that much improved.

It almost reads like they are trying to cash it all in this season, and make the playoffs just to make the fans happy.
I don't get it, sure it sucks that Smiley and Kumo go down but that's baseball, giving up prospects ( 3 out of your top 20) for three guys that aren't above average....

Well see the thing is, the moves they've made to "cash it all in this season" don't even make the team all that better...

I know that a lot of people freak out about Cishek, but his numbers are only marginally worse than Phelps. Yes, I like Phelps more than Cishek, but he's only marginally better.

Erasmo and Gonzales IMO aren't much better than the guys we've thrown out there in the back of the rotation. Gonzales has the "potential" to be a #3, but a realistic expectation is a #4 with injury issues.

The team just hasn't gotten much better through these trades. We've made trades to improve the team from 2017-2019, but I believe we are only marginally improved. 1 win at most. While doing so, we've given up a lot of trade chips.

If you told me we got those three guys for O'Neill alone, or we got those three guys for everyone in the "Gone" list except O'Neill I would feel a lot better. When you combine all of those guys and include O'Neill it's a little gut wrenching. As some of you know, I'm not necessarily as high on O'Neill as some on these boards, but I do feel we could have fetched much more than we did.

Also Cishek has a $6M contract vs Ramirez having $3.125M for this year meaning they saved about $1.75M for the remainder of the year...but Ramirez is also 'controllable'. Two things M's love.

Check that. I guess are sending money to offset salaries. Savings will come over the next two years I guess since they won't have to get a free agent pen arm to replace Cishek.

All being said, I prefer Erasmo more than Cishek. The submarine is too erratic in my opinion

It's starting to look like it's more about quantity rather than quality. They would rather have four good guys with club control instead of one or two great guys with expiring contracts. I get it to a certain degree, but I ask why then deplete your farm system in the process? JeDi is very confusing right now.

I don't get it one bit. The goal is to get better for a playoff run or they should sell off and play for next year. Cishek is way better than Ramirez and if you signed real SP's in the off season you don't need to trade for a swing pitcher who isn't very good at either role.

Erasmo Ramirez career numbers with TB and Seattle: 22-20 with a 4.30 ERA in 71 starts and 7-12 with a 4.04 ERA in 100 relief appearances.

controllable

I may be alone in this thought, but I prefer Erasmus over Moore at this point. Plus, I don't mind allowing Cishek to not blow late leads this late in the season. I think we get a little better with this deal, but by a small margin.

Really?

I know the kid (Moore) is long ball lover, but I honestly feel that's just the youth in him. Yeah 1st or 2nd he might give one up here and there, but it's not like he's loading the bases up and serving a meatball..

Honestly I would have been more patient if JD sat these deals out, ( unless he could land a serviceable starter) and ran with the young guns out of the pen and starters ....
