Its an odd move that if coupled with others could be fine. But if picking up a 3 year $39 million contract means you cant add any where else on the roster, specifically the addressing the biggest weakness then its an awful trade

That's kind of the Jerry speak I don't get. Gordon is exactly the opposite type of player he talks about wanting, but uses money on him and not pitching. Don't get me wrong, I'm not against the Gordon deal because I like Segura 2 and moving Haniger down so he doesn't have the pressure. But why on Earth does he care about blocking fringe major major caliber starters but it's ok to spend money and block a combo of Heredia and Gamel? Could've resigned Dyson and still got Cobb or Lynn.

He could DH too if they are serious about trying Cruz at 1B. Still don't get why they don't do the logical move, move Cano to 1B, Segura to 2B then find a serviceable SS. It's easier finding a good defensive SS who hits .200 or put Gordon back in the infield. Just my opinion Cano will end up at 1B so why not try him there and improve the defense instead of a guy who will struggle in CF and 1B.

Our first basemen in 2017: 24 doubles, 3 triples, 19 HR, 77 RBI .245/.308/.389

Ryon Healy: 29 doubles, 0 triples, 25 HR, 78 RBI, .271/.302/.451

Healy is also younger, and cheaper than a Alonso/Valencia combo.

Seattle Mariners

Hole: Rotation

Targets: None

First base is actually a potential problem, as the Mariners rank 29th in projected value there, but Jerry Dipoto acquired Ryon Healy early in the offseason. He just isn't very good. Dipoto also indicated recently that the team isn't going to pursue another veteran pitcher to give youngsters such as Ariel Miranda, Andrew Moore and Marco Gonzales a chance at the back of the rotation.

Healy or Dipoto?

Hated giving up Gohara. It was one of those moves I just knew I would hate the moment it happened.

I liked Smyly (pre injury of course), but I don't understand Mariners plan long term with him. Why didn't they pick up his option and at least hold him for another year and maybe deal him later? IDK it just seemed like the biggest waste of talent for nothing. It is all just so Mariners.

Think maybe Smyly's ordeal is shying Jerry away from going after a SP? I've been trying to rack my brain and figure out how in the frick Jerry isn't interested in a SP.

I gave up trying to figure out anything Dipoto does. The Mariners really need to stop bringing in Angels cast offs to GM.

Never thought about that, but makes sense. I just don't like the idea of trading youth for one year players. I know Smyly was under control for the second year, butM's cheapen out and let him walk so it ends up being a one year waste. I could of lived with just the Atlanta trade before the flip to Tampa.

There are articles out there stating both that the Mariners playoff window is still open and others saying that it is closing fast. My question is, 'When was it ever open?'.

I get dealing prospects if you need a guy for a playoff run. I didn't mind the Smyly deal mostly because as you said he wasn't suppose to be a one year player. I'm sure the market will come down to where they can get a guy on a 1 year or 2 year deal. Nothing that will hamstring the franchise so I can't fathom him being sold on his rotation. This team is built for the Kingdome or some band box stadium.

Contract wise, I think there is a 2 year window. They aren't close IMO but they have enough pieces in place but they are missing pitchers. They have a playoff caliber offense, on paper a playoff caliber bullpen. But a last place rotation.

Classic case of Dipoto trying to buy low on a starting pitcher coming off an injury while giving up one of the better assets in the system. Not exactly like O'Neil/Gonzalez but somewhat similar. I liked Smyly too and thought he could be our 2nd best starter before the year. However you keep going after these guys coming off injuries or down years and hoping for a bounce back you are gonna get burned more often then not.
